I have noticed this being debated on various threads. I have submitted 3 choices for you. If you think it was none of these, please tick Other and put why. This issue seems to split Calzaghe fans

The night of his best performance was Lacy. The night he beat his best opponent was Kessler (B-Hop's stamina was gone when the fought). Question answered.

I see what you're saying, and it's a legitimate point very well-expressed, but I disagree. I think you are saying he was better around that age because fighters are generally better around that age. If you look at the period you have selected, Calzaghe was only really impressive in a blowout of Mario Veit and the admittedly supreme performance against Mitchell. Other than that, he either fought SHOCKING opposition or was unimpressive. Being taken to points by the overrated Charles Brewer, when Brewer had been blasted out in 3 by middleweight Antwun Echols one year previously, was not indicative of a man at his peak IMO. Would that Calzaghe have beaten Mikkel Kessler? I don't think so, no way. Calzaghe only looked bad against Hopkins because Hopkins is far more skilled than anyone Calzaghe has ever faced. Calzaghe peaked when he produced his best performances v his best opposition. Otherwise, you are just speculating he could have been better in 00-03, but there's no evidence for this. And IMO, he wasn't anyway, Kessler would've beaten 00-03 Joe.

Anybody is going to look faster, stronger, and sharper against lower quality opposition - so it's very hard to judge. Because of that I have to link it to his best performances.

If Kessler is as good as some people make him out to be (for sake of argument, an A+ grade fighter), there is no way Joe could beat a top level fighter that convincingly (nine months ago), whilst being way past (many years past) his peak. If that was the case he would have to have been absolutely stupendous in his real prime blowing out quality opposition all over the place - that simply wasn't the case.

Anyway, I will have to go for "2006-7 Lacy & Kessler fights", as that's where his greatest ever performances were. I do acknowledge that it is possible that he may have lost some of his physical attributes with age, but I think the whole package has improved with maturity. It's very hard to gauge his status against Hopkins as he spoils, but personally I thought Joe looked superb against Kessler, and I couldn't see another version of Calzaghe defeating him more convincingly - and with reletive ease.

I voted for the Mitchell era, simply as he still had zip in his punches then. He was still scoring knockouts and winning in style. His best achievements and boxing development came in the Lacy/ Kessler period, these are arguable the better fighters he has fought and were prime.

I've rewatched the Kessler and Hopkins fights and its hard to say he if he slowed down much. I looked forward to being at the garden to see how he stacks up. I hope he can bow out gracefully and like all good fighters get the recognition he deserves after he's gone.

What bugs me is people seem to think Calzaghe is still in his 20's he's 36 himself so this fight is not about him chasing corpses. He is testing himself against the guy that ruled SMW just before him.
