Wow, 8 years on here, and 24'000 posts and yet you're still a complete nobody on these boards atsch The fact that he retired 4 years ago, and yet there are multiple threads about him everyday suggests people do indeed give a **** :deal
no matter how compelling of a case I propose, you won't buy it. no one can be swayed from valuing the greatness of their heroes. keep in mind though, that if he were from america, a host of americans would consider him overrated, and that would include me.
you are a moron The reason there's so many HW threads and Brit Threads on ESB is cuz it's full of Brits and Dirty Eastern Euros the 'other place' have much less Brit Posters and almost no dirty eastern polock hence a lot more Floyd Manny threads... compare to this one.
I will wholeheartedly disagree with this. Both Mayweather and JCC Jr. are based here and they get more "cherry picker" hate than any other active boxers, and most of it is domestic. We would say the same of Joe, probably worse. Joe slapped like a girl, fought in a non-glamor division, and fought two shells of guys many Americans had soured on already. His career wouldn't play here. We demand much more from our fighters.
You demand more from your fighters? Buddy, it's not a stretch to say that the Domestic division in the UK outstrips that in the US for a fair few divisions. Shocking when you consider the countries P4P natrue. If Calzaghe had been taught to Box by a proper trainer, either British or American then he'd of been taught to turn his hands over when punching. He wasn't and it turned out to be a blessing. It worked for him. To assume it wouldn't of worked in America is narrow minded. Calzaghe competes with most fighters ever around his weight.
In all honesty, ESB has several posters who are Calzaghe fans but not neccessarily boxing fans. You never see them in any round by round threads and they rarely appear in threads related to other weight classes. Those fans start a thread or two each day and have generated a huge backlash against Slappy. In response, other posters start a thread or two to bait them in. All in all, it's kind of like the UFO debate, with the Slappy nuthuggers being the guys who swear there are Martians hidden in a government lab somewhere.
Weren't his hands too brittle to hit with the knuckles? I know you are a fair minded person, but remember I live here, am 36 years old, and work in sales and marketing. Hopkins/Dawson couldn't sell here; Ward has a hard time selling tickets here. Wlad's fights aren't televised here. Joe wouldn't sell. He didn't have the KO or get KO'd appeal of Lewis, the bad boy image of Hamed, or an appealing style to watch.
Hmmm. I agree to a large degree. SJ, I think you are a good poster but There really is no domestic scene in the US as compared to the UK. Almost no stock is put into regional champions such as the nabo or such. It's a lot different over here in that regard. It is either world champ or bust. As for expecting more....guys like Mayweather, Berto and Chavez have copped a lot of **** for their opponents over the years. You simply can't go long swaths of time wih mediocre opposition and expect not to hear a lot of criticism. A guy like Kelly Pavlik was a the next gwh got tons of it for doing what a guy like Calzaghe did for he better part of a decade. Except Pavlik did it for like 4 or 5 fights. There are just different expectations. No to say i is better or worse to be on one side of the pond, it is just you simply can't not fight at a certain level forever or you will get called on it.
I'll agree that marketing him would be hard. Victories do rack up and boost tv exposure but yeah, there's no real X factor there. Agreed. His ability, far outstrips his marketability, and resume.
