Joe Calzaghe is confident Sunday November 2,2008 By Niall Hickman Joe Calzaghe has finally admitted a Battle of Britain could go ahead, if both he and Carl Froch win their respective fights before the New Year. Calzaghe faces Roy Jones Jnr in the small hours of next Sunday morning at New Yorks Madison Square Garden. The Welshman has promised to retire from boxing afterwards but now insists he could be willing to delay hanging up his gloves to fight Froch. Nottingham hero Froch tackles Jean Pascal for the WBC super-middleweight title on December 6 and an impressive victory could trigger a massive all-British showdown, possibly in Cardiff. I dont think there is anything out there for me to prove any longer, but I think you should never say never in boxing, said Calzaghe. If Froch wins then who knows? I dont think he is in my league as a fighter but he would have the WBC title and that is an honour. Hes decent but he has a very stand-up style and hes easy to hit. He would be beaten, just like every fighter Ive ever faced. Until now Calzaghe has been adamant the Jones fight would be his last, but now the door is ajar for Froch to face the Pride of Wales. Nottingham Forest fanatic Froch, 30, would not flinch at going to Cardiff to for the big clash. Id be there like a shot, he said. My style is made to beat Calzaghe. Id end his unbeaten run and send him into retirement. Everyone gets old eventually and Calzaghe, as his last performance against Bernard Hopkins showed, is getting past it. Calzaghe is hoping for win No 46 against Jones, an American sporting icon, but now 39 years of age and past his absolute prime. Its a huge fight for me and its the first time Ive appeared at Madison Square Garden, said Calzaghe. Thats motivation enough. Id have loved to have fought Jones many years ago but this is still unfinished business. He is the only opponent out there who can give me a battle at light-heavyweight and yet, after beating Bernard Hopkins after stepping up from super-middle, Im even more confident in my ability. Roy Jones likes to be a showman and he likes to dazzle which will play right into my hands. At least he wont bore to tears everyone like Hopkins does. Jones comes to win and so do I which means it is going to be a terrific match-up. Former middle, super-middle, light-heavy and heavyweight world champion Jones is in the twilight of his career. But after three straight losses in 2004 and 2005 he has recovered with three straight wins and in his last outing he delivered a near-perfect display in beating the once-great Felix Trinidad on points in January. And Jones is supremely confident that he has the weapons to beat Calzaghe. I dont have to match Joes output. I just have to find the punch to knock him out. Ill win the fight no question. Im not certainhow, but Im going to win it. Hopkins was too cautious with Calzaghe and that was his goal, to stay upright. My job is to come out of there with a victory. http://forum.boxrec.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=91534 Froch would finally get exposed!:happy:happy There was also a thread on there about Hennessey offering Calzaghe 5 million to fight Froch strangely sounding like their overlooking Pascal.
This is the fight I want to see. But in terms of improving Calzaghe's resume, and generating £££, I'm not sure its the right fight for Joe, unless Froch loses and then goes on to bigger things.
Calzaghe has always considered Froch a risky fight. Froch could have easily been in the opposite corner instead of Peter Manfredo Jnr But Joe wanted the soft touch. Joes a good fighter - and he is a winner - and he is Welsh. All this talk about his amazing unbeaten record though leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth. He has wan 4 world title belts - so you know he is a quality fighter. However this 45-0 record or whatever it is is padded out with bums. Joe should be remebered for being a great British fighter but who fed on alot of bums too.
I think Calzaghe has always wanted one more fight after Jones, before Hopkins he was saying this fight and two more. I reckon he had Pavlik mentally penciled in, now thats gone down the tubes its either rematch Hopkins or Jones (assuming its a decent, competitive fight) or fight Dawson or Froch. Dawson doesn't really have a name over here so I'd think Froch would be less fight for more money in Cardiff or the O2?
I think the whole point of the manfredo fight was to increase Calzaghe's name in America, at that point Calzaghe was chasing Jermaine Taylor and beating a well known American was seen as a stepping stone towards that fight. I don't think it was ever intended to be a challenge. Also, i think by this stage in Joe's career there just wasn't enough in a Froch fight for him, i think he'd finally grown tired of mere title defences (as evident by has last 5 fights). On the Froch Calzaghe fight itself, i think Frochs only hope of victory is if Calzaghe finally grows old and slows down. Froch fights at a much slower pace than Calzaghe, could he match Calzaghes output? Also he throws alot slower too and his head movement isn't great, this again plays into Calzaghes hands. Arguably he hits harder than Calzaghe but his KO's have come against bums and Calzaghe has good movement and a brilliant chin, therefore Calzaghe wins comfortable points decision.
A win over Froch would do nothing for Joe's legacy. If he does continue to fight Dawson is the only scalp that would improve his resume...maybe with the exception of a more convincing win against Hopkins. Still nervous as **** about the RJJ fight though.
I can't see Calzaghe fighting Froch in his last or even next fight, even for £5m. I just can't. What would it prove? He could make more than £5m fighting a lot of people he would have a very good chance of beating. Would the British casual fans even be desperate for this fight, as opposed to any other? You can never say never, but I just don't buy it. Look at the source: it's the Sunday Express, the paper that prints all those Froch press-releases. Is this really for real? http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/69027/Calzaghe-ready-to-do-u-turn-on-Froch-fight-once-he-has-put-skids-under-Jones Still, maybe it is; maybe Calzaghe is thinking, why not take £5m for a fight I'm almost guaranteed to win quite impressively. Better risk/reward than Dawson, that's for sure. I guess the Froch hype machine has to go up a couple of gears and Froch has to beat Pascal very impressively for this fight to be made. If I were Froch, though, I'd certainly not look past Pascal...
Bear in mind that Joe often changes his mind and the headlines may say the complete opposite next week. If he is open to the fight, excellent. I always thought the one thing missing off Joe's body of work, is a fight with a hungry young contender. He's unified with guys in their primes, he's picked on older greats. And it would be nice to see him in with a puncher on the way up, a guy like Froch who has it all to gain. It is good for British boxing if exciting fights like this are made. If the money's there, Joe is there. Over to you, Froch. Go and batter Pascal.
How about Lacy and Kessler? They were even better than mere contenders; at least Kessler was; he was a proper Champ! Calzaghe fought quite a few hungry young contenders, not least Bika, Manfredo, etc. What you must mean is: he never fought a hungry young British contender with little chance of winning.
Hmm if Calzaghe goes for Froch he must have the aim of 50-0 because Froch on his own, WBc belt or not does very lil to pump up JCs legacy. I reckon he should retire after Jones as 50-0 isnt his aim.
