Retireing undefeated is a nice plan, but a win over Hopkins is not quite a sure thing. Benard is this generations Archie Moore. Truth is , I can't even figure out what makes Joe so successful . He seems wide open much of the time , flails away with his head in the air, and doesn't seem particularly fast or powerful. You can't argue with success however, and the look of total confusion on the faces of formidable fighters like Lacy and Kessler is proof of Calzaghes effectiveness. But if anyone can exploit Joe's defects , as subtle as they may be, its Hopkins. Tight defense, straight , short punches , good timing, and a respectful punch are the keys to beating Joe, and these are Benards strenghts. Lacy was just a puncher, and Kessler doesn't have Hopkins' savvy and experience. I wouldn't rent the hall for Joes undefeated retirement party just yet.
Some interesting points. Poor punching technique (imo) has caused hand injuries and reduced his power. He has a tendency to fall in over balance sometimes as well, due I think to an overeagerness to attack. Kesslers counters punished him for that, forcing him to box more behind his jab which turned the fight around. He's a boxer with the mindset of a brawler which often makes fights that should be easy very difficult. The Charles Brewer fight is a good example. Joes dumb tactics made for a great scrap. How you can say he's not particularly fast is mystifying however. He's sl;ower than he was 5 years ago but still has excellent hand speed.
Easily, and nobody could deny he would go down as the best british boxer of all time if he manages that.
Lets say Joe beats Hopkins, Chad beats Johnson and Tarver beats Woods. Joe should then fight RJJ. Chad should fight Tarver. The winners then meet in an 'instant legend' match (my £$£ is on JC - CD). Cannot fail can it ??
PLUS.....He already said this is his last but one fight and is only looking for one more after Hopkins so all this talk is pointless
Joe Calzaghe is the best of this and all generations. Those three fights have no bearing on anything. What is, is.
Don't kid yourself, a win against B-Hop is bigger than all of the others. A win against all of them would get my vote for him being one of the best.
