Calzaghe gaining these wins...

Joe already missed his shot to go down as the 'best of this generation'.....sorry guys.

 

I don't think Calzaghe could ever be considerd the best of this generation just look at PBF. Although he definately had the ability to, but it is difficult for a white man from Newbridge, Wales to get much recognition.

 

Well RJJ and Calzaghe are the same "generation" - only a few years apart - and they could have fought each other prime for prime - if the fight had been made - there was even a pretty wide window for that fight.

Then there is Hopkins - who I would rate along side Calzaghe (if Calzaghe beats the three named in the start)

 

What's this generation?

Does it include Floyd? If so, obviously not.

Or a reigning Hopkins as champion under the age of 40? If so, I really don't think so.

I mean, he's only just broken into the p4p top 5. Let him stay there with some longevity before we say something crazy like he's the best of the generation. Your favourite fighter maybe, but come on.

Well I'd certainly put Floyd and still Hopkins above him as best of this generation. A win over Hopkins now does not make him greater, imo. I suppose, it also must account for what Manny Pac does also. He beats JMM, perhaps Guzman, and a title at 135 - he's arguably better too.

 

It depends what others do really...

Calzaghe will be recognized as the best of this decade if he beats Hopkins, Dawson, and Woods and if Mayweather beats De La Hoya and retires or beats De La Hoya and loses to Cotto. The same goes if Pacquiao were to lose to Marquez.

Calzaghe wont go down as the best of this generation if Mayweather beats De La Hoya and Cotto. And even if Mayweather doesn't do that, if Pacquiao beats Marquez, Guzman, and wins a belt at lightweight, he likely becomes the best of this generation.

 

I very much disagree with this one, although agree completely with the rest of the post. Mayweather certainly MUST lose for Calzaghe to surpass him.

The final year of Mayweather's career (if he chooses Dela Hoya and retires) can't harm him as much as the first 5 years of Calzaghe's title reign did, surely?

 

Since is win over Peter Manfredo, Big Joe is for sure the best !!

What harm to your record does going unbeaten for 5 years while beating recent world champs in Eubank, Reid, Woodhall and Brewer, plus the highly rated Omar Sheika, 30-0 Mario Veit and David "I just handed Clinton Woods his ass" Starie among others actually do? This recieved wisdom that Calzaghe fought nobody for years till Lacy is just bollocks. Just because you either havnt been following boxing long enough to remember who those guys were or just dont know enough about boxing to know doesnt mean they were nobodies.

Hopkins. Jones. Dawson would be the best way of silencing the non believers, only a chimpanze could argue vs that resume and his current wins. :deal

 

I agree, Jones is the same generation as JC, they are what, 3 years apart?

Though I'd rate JC over Hopkins all-time if he wins these 3 fights.

We're talking about the best of the generation here. And it really came down to a battle of resumes.... For if Floyd chooses Dela Hoya in 08 and then retires, you can't really attack him for that, for IN COMPARISON, Dela Hoya in 08 is probably actually better then say - a Ricky Thornberry, or even a Will McIntrye, or lets say for Calzaghe's sake, a Charles Brewer. HENCE MAYWEATHER CANNOT BE ATTACKED FOR *WASTING* HIS LAST YEAR, UNLESS YOUR WILLING TO DO THE SAME FOR 5 OR 6 YEARS OF CALZAGHE'S TITLE REIGN.

Mayweather was beating guys like Genero Hernandez and Manfredy back in 98, Diego Corrales, Carlos Hernandez and Jesus Chavez in 00; Jose Luis Castillo TWICE in 01, and Corely in 02 (Might be a year out)... And while many claim that he has hand-picked picked his recent opponents, he's still added guys like Gatti, Judah, Baldomir, Dela Hoya and now Ricky Hatton in the last few years... Just SLIGHTLY better than a Jeff Lacy and Mikkel Kessler. I'm quite surprised that's not seen the same as 1 + 1 being 2. But to each his own.

Oh, and Oma Shieka, 30-0 Mario Veit rofl ), and David Starie (who beat a Woods who had YET to be EATEN by Jones, wow)... are simply not on the same level as 80% of Mayweather's opponents.

 

I dunno, roy beat hopkins and toney both in their primes. thats tough to beat. I dont put kessler near toney's or hopkins level. Dawson might turn out to be that caliber (I think he will), but i really dont see joe beating chad. Chad can match his workrate, has a WAY better right hand, and is younger.
