Tommy Farr, Bob Fitsimmons, Lennox Lewis and so many other great champs and fighters who did not attain a belt are all superb credits to British boxing and to pick one over the other would be a great debate and would also be a fantastic book that I would treasure reading. Calzage for along time been the nearly man when mentioned with the likes of our true greats but after last night's win he deserves to be talked about with similar accolade and I would not argue too much when pressed with a better more thought out argument than mine if someone was to call him our best ever. Being a champ for over ten years, fighting many top dangerous fighters both domestic and foriegn, winning all the true recognised world belts, making 20 twenty defenses, being undefeated, having a huge loyal support and I could go on and on especially about how he has managed to dominate his opponents and how the future looks as bright now as it did ten years ago plus the fact that he is rated by press and peers internationally something many of our boys have failed to acheive. He also looks to have the beating of the guys at light heavy. So it is hard to find a way to say he isnt amongst our greats or maybe eventhe top.
Conteh was better than Calzaghe. THe light heavyweight Napoles, he did waste his talent but would still have handled Joe comfortably. Better than Buchanan as well.
He has certainly placed himself among the elite of grear British fighters but not in the number one slot. That place is reserved emphaticaly for Bob Fitzsimmons.
LB 4 LB , he is up there Ken Buchanan is top 5 Lewis also but Calzage is better all around then them, Ben, Turpin, Cooper,Farr, Eubanks top 10, I would have to say Joe may be the best
For achievements you have to give him a mention now as he has held all the most prestigeous belts and never lost any of them in the ring but to say he is the best british fighter of all time is being rather bold imo. I would say the most naturally gifted fighter from the UK was Hamed (although he never fullfilled his full potential after he sacked long time trainer Ingle and believed his own hype) Lewis was a 3 time HW champ (although people say that as if it is better than a 1 time HW champ but in reality he had to lose the belt twice and win it back again in order to become 3 tim champ) who beat everyman he ever faced and was actually a great technician for a man as big as he was. Buchanan imo is the top of the tier (but others opinions may differ from that as its all about opinions afterall and without them we'd have a very quiet forum lol) and his heart, talent and determination is still echoed in boxing circles today. Eubank was a fighter that rarely needed an introduction and has been the provider of many a cracking bout and lets not forget his counterpart Nigel Benn who must surely be up there aswell (Benn had the passion of a poet with regards to boxing and the heart of a lion) Ricky Hatton is not the top brit of all time imo but if he beats Mayweather (doubtful imo) then he has to be recognised for that achievement alone never mind his other fights. Jim Watt was another tough cookie who as someone mentioned earlier was a title holder back when the belt was far more sought after than today dut to the fact there was only two at the time. There are many more ...Wilde, McGuigan, Conteh, McCullough and Fitzsimmons etc etc etc
Well its debatable as to whether he is the best welsh fighter ever. You guys ever heard of a little fella called jimmy wilde? Look at an ATG p4p list, near the top 20 or so. You are sure to find him
