To me it depends on how he wants to be remembered. If he retires now he will be remembered as a great champion but people wll still question his comparative greatness to other fighters. Given that he's piting himself as one of the all time greats, and his idiot father is telling us that he's the greatest p4p in history, why not ask him to show us why??

    atm on rate him on:

    1 win over Lacy
    2 win over Kessler
    3 win over Hopkins
    4 undefeated Career

1 was good not because he was because Lacy was an overhyped, slow witted muscle head but the way that Joe foght was a true exhibition. I give him an 8/10 for the performance.

2 was his best win to me. Kessler is a proven, well rounded fighter, and bar Calzaghe easily the best SMW around. It was a competitive fight, but Joe showed his slight edge in talent as well as his versatility. 9/10 for that one.

3 Hopkins fight seems the hardest to rate given the question marks about how good he is at this age. In my opinion Hopkins 43 yo style, based on out crafting his opponents, is against some fighters (who have technical weaknesses) just as formidable as what he brought in his prime. However against solid, active fighters it won't work because if you keep applying pressure Hopkins will fade and resort to aggressive holding. What I saw in the Hopkins fight was a man get tired. He showed himself a superior boxer in the first half of the fight but could not handle the pace and did not adequately contest the rounds in the second half. A good win by Calzaghe but, yes, age did play a part, so not exactly what I would call a 'conquest of a legend'.
    7/10

4 is commendable. Yes, his resume lacks depth, but there are some good wins there, and remaining undefeated is itself no small feat. in 46 fights Calzaghe has never failed himself, never had an off-night, never met a style he couldn't combat. This speaks volumes about his determination and versatility.
    9/10

The above are the highlight's of Joe Calzaghe's career which I will use to determine his place in boxing history should he quit now. On the flip side to his achievement above, there is a wow factor lacking from his career. There is nothing like what Roy Jones and Mayweather did, demolishing other elite fighters and winning titles at quadruple weight classes. I've never really seen anything 'awesome' from him in the ring, either. If one of his virtues is that he can raise the bar when needed, the vice is that he often only does just enough to win, offering up pedestrian performances. He's sloppy, undisciplined, pone to knockdowns, and he slaps. To look at he just isn't the sort of fighter you imagine could hang with a pime Roy Jones or Hopkins.

Joe has had a long career but the part of it that has been open to all comers has been quite short, so yes, no matter how many fights, undefeated or not, there is still a lot he could do to prove himself. I would like to see him fight Dawson, cause yeah..he could do with some more top level wins.

I actually hadn't thought of that matchup. I hear Kessler turned it down.
