You know yourself De La Hoya had no business being in the ring with a guy that now fights at Light Heavy.....
Not everything is punching power or physical strength... you can't react to a punch you can't see and Hopkins is the master of putting his opponents off-balance and landing a sneaky hook on the inside... Joe was prepared for everything Kessler threw... you can't prepare yourself for the shot that all of sudden knocked down Robert Allen...
Calzaghe isn't Robert Allen though....and Hopkins has lost speed People say Hopkins counters will slow Calzaghe down but I think Hopkins will be affected by the punch volume of Calzaghe just as much as anything...... If Hopkins trades in the centre of the ring with Calzaghe then he's lost
Of course, this is what im saying, this fight can surprise all of us. They can both hit the canvas, Hopkins got the best balance in the sport, he's always in possition to punch, he will land on Calzaghe, unlike some of these haters say on this site. Hopkins will make it a fight, believe it.
I dont doubt for one second that Hopkins will make this a fight.....he's still an elite performer but all this talk about KOs is silly cos Hopkins doesnt like to trade in the centre of the ring....the right hand is of course a factor but Calzaghe can win the rounds without having to expose himself to the counters
But he won't. He won't give a f* to the fans and to make it more exciting. He will KILL the fight, make it ugly, make it dirty, a lot of holding, using the head, playing mindgames, everything to make Joe uncomfortable... Hopkins is very hard to hit so the stoppage is only possible if BHop is a shot fighter (shot fighters don't defeat Winky Wrights). So even if Joe will throw a lot, will still land few. But that's gonna be enough if Hopkins can't turn the fight into his game... If he can, if he can make Joe angry or force Calzaghe to take chances, an opportunity can very well come... Hopkins was never about speed. He always was about timing. Great reflexes, great ring intelligence and knowladge and timing is his best weapon since he's not playing the pressure game of the earlier years... the timing of Hopkins is one of the most effective I've ever seen...
The truth is that he has been beaten 4 times in the past and so we know he can be beaten....he's older now and is facing an unbeaten guy with confidence and will have the fans support....Hopkins will be p4p number 1 if he beats Calzaghe
The big important thing about this fight is that it is so hard to predict what will happen and who to choose to win. Great fight.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=JXzjj7f5Yno this was posted in another thread hopkins either has gained alot of weight or is built like a tank not bad for a 43 year old
When you're talking about two elite fighters, with wildly different styles, and no experience against eachother, nor against common opponents, and one of the fighters is fighting at a higher weight for the first time in his career, absolutely anything can happen. Anyone who says this can't end by KO is living in a pre-PBF v Hatton world.
Calzaghe didn't want to put Lacy away. He wanted to put on a devastating performance for the full 12 rounds.
I don't think Hopkins will KO Calzaghe. I think he will hurt him, and perhaps even knock him down, probably due to Joe being off-balance, but Joe is a tough cookie and a warrior. I also don't envision Joe throwing caution to the wind, he knows what he's up against, and I suspect this fight will start off as a very tactical battle for both men. This fight is going to be about making adjustments, and I believe Hopkins has a huge edge here. That's not to say Joe isn't a versatile fighter, but I think Hopkins is gonna have a few tricks up his sleeve that take Joe by surprise. I'll stick with Hopkins winning via points or late stoppage due to cuts, but I don't see a clean KO. I'd be surprised if that happens.
