"I will not come back because of money. It's not a case of somebody offering me a fortune and me suddenly going back on all my promises. I know Lennox Lewis put a price of 100 million dollars on a comeback but I'm not going to even come up with a crazy figure. It's never been the money with me and some of my rivals simply can't understand that. It was always about being the best and fighting the best and after 46 unbeaten fights I think I achieved everything I set out to. I can walk away now with my head high and to be honest I'm not even going to listen to any of the offers - or any of the insults."

A fine set of principles to have, much like the great Rocky Marciano (though he almost came out with retirement for Ingemaar, that wasn't money motivated.)

Didn't he recently say "its all about the money?". Didn't he say he would possibly fight on if the money was right? Now he says "its never been the money with me" Can someone clarify this? Am I remembering things that never happened or is my memory correct? I can't find a link but I'm sure he's said it plenty of times.

Eh? Did he just contradict himself? I remember him saying he is only looking for big money fights or something to that extent when he wasn't retired yet..

Yep he probably has said contrary things in the past, like all people do.
Remember he said he would never fight RJJ.
He hasnt had time to change his mind yet,he's not long fought Jones.Give it time.

Whichever way you look at it ,he is going out on his own terms.
Too many people in sports hang around too long and pay the price.

JC fought the best?????? who??? Lacy? Kessler? An 43 year old BHOP? or a washed up Jones who struggled against trinidad?

Joe Calzaghe contradicting himself, whatever next? Anybody who has followed Calzaghe's career to any extent will know that he usually just says whatever is in his head at the time. Which is frequently different to what was there last time he was interviewed. It's hardly a new or startling occurence.

Kessler and Hopkins were certainly the best opponents he could have fought in or around his weightclass at the time he fought them.

I have no problem saying that JC is a great fighter but he DOES NOT fight the best. So far is a blown up old bhop who didn't do **** besides beating tarver in light heavy. Bhop can't beat Chad. Chad will murder Joe and Bhop both.

I guess if you put it that way but Kessler fought nobody in a weak division. Hopkins is very cunning but no real pop anymore. Joe should have fought Chad.

Freedom of speech, I guess. Even if it is false or contradictory.

Kessler fought all the top contenders in the division. He holds wins over the current number three and four in the Ring rankings for the weight.

Hopkins was the man at LHW after beating Tarver whereas Dawson had beaten? Adamek? Harding? Noone was suggesting Calzaghe should fight Dawson rather than Hopkins. In fact, hardly anyone was suggesting Calzaghe should fight Dawson after he beat Hopkins, it was all 'Pavlik will walk through Calzaghe's feeble slaps and ko him' before Hopkins shone some light on that myth and Dawson inherited the new American hype mantle.
