He should have gone for broke after he had Calzaghe down, and certainly once he realised that his counterpunching wasn't doing much to Calzaghe anymore (certainly by round 6 or so, if not earlier)...

Even if he was only an eight round fighter by this stage, he should have given it his all for those 8 rounds and gone out on his shield, rather than like a humiliated non-hero.

So...in response to the thread...wasn't Jones also an egomaniac taking this fight and then fighting the way he did?

I don't understand why Jones was showboating either. He's in one of the toughest fights of his career, he' losing and he starts showboating. Bloody stupid.

There was a point in the first half of the fight when they were both stood in front of each other dancing. The commentators seemed to love it but it was making a mockery a fight which had a lot of critics to begin with. If I want that sort of thing I'll watch the celebrity dancing programme.

    yeah both ego maniacs

but Roy is the same in every fight

but the big stage brings the plonker out of Calzaghe

i dont think he was trying to humilate Jones - he wanted to show he could do that in a ring with a legend - it was all about his own ego - nothing against Jones

Not just the big stage...Calzahe has showboated in almost every fight...including against Bika, who was hardly a great fighter or a big stage fighter...it's just the way he is. Still, he did showboat more against Jones, as you say, because he wanted to do that against the legendary showboater...

The Sakio Bika fight is a prime example of bringing the plonker out of Calzaghe

there was a reason why he was acting up so childish there

no it was not a big stage or a big fight

    but

it was the fight after the Jeff Lacy fight and that win had given him recognition in Amercia

so much so that HBO were screening that fight live to America

    and Calzaghe ego knew this

thats why he was acting such a fool

he was trying to impress the American audience
    This content is protected

obviously though he was just making a **** of himself in that fight

if that had been a normal defence with no HBO coverage Calzaghe would have been much more business like

but his ego and pride are such - he does silly things to make himself look good -

Joseph turned pro whilst Jones Jr had nearly had 20 odd fights and was already the IBF world champion. Dont try and tell me that Calzaghe & Jones have comparabled miles ! lol

Man, it's crazy over in General at the moment though. Virtually every thread for the first 4 pages are about Joe & RJJ.

Jones could have gone for broke in the first, he had so many opportunitites to let his hands go but he didn't. It was very tense watching, after drinking coffee all day in a vain attempt to keep my eyes open, I clawed at my face the whole time! To say I was jittery is an understatement.

Dropping his hands may be Joes style but he knows damn well what it looks like, to his opponant, his corner & his fans. I was scared that hee was overestimating his reaction time, he may have been, but Jones never went for him to really test it.

Having said that, Jones' eye was pissing blood and he still made it to the final bell. I enjoyed that fight immensely.

Yeah...about the eye...someone said they didn't put anything on it at first because they were hoping he'd get stopped on a cut so that he wouldn't have to be humiliated any more. In retrospect, I can almost buy that...

I will be watching the re-run of the this fight at 5pm.

The fact is alot of people are getting emotional over this fight. The odds on pick was always Calzaghe on points, and that is exactly what happened. Everyone knew Jones was far gone before this fight.

After the result, Jones should now retire. Calzaghe has one fight left, but he should also retire.
