Dont even need to read the article, but I wish Calzaghe would just **** off into retiremment. He was my favourite fighter a year or two back, now I cant stand him. Firstly he refuses to take on the hardest challenges and would rather fight a washed up Roy Jones. After totally dismissing Jones in his book, he desperately tried to make him out as a credible opponent. But recently, bad mouthing people for being nobodies who dont deserve to be in the ring with him, Pavlik, Froch, Dawson etc, he has got a real attitude problem recently, an egomaniac in overdrive. And bad mouthing boxing as a dying sport, criticising it for the very things he personified for so long, ie crappy belts, failure to fight the best challengers. As far as i'm concerned, In wish he would **** off. He deserves every bit of criticism he gets, he has the chance to take on the best challenges, instead he considers himself above them. He is a *****.
Doesn't that fact make him one of the best people to speak out about that? Calzaghe didn't make boxing that way, all the belts and split championships were there way before he came along. He has been a symptom of the problem for parts of his career, but he is not the root of it.
No he was not the root of it. But why bad mouth the sport as you are leaving? The guy has continually avoided the biggest challenges, I gave him the benefit of the doubt in years gone by, but now he is at the top and a cash cow, he avoids the likes of Dawson, Pavlik, etc. Says they are not worth his time. Clearly, he is in it for the money more than anything else. Not necessarily a bad thing, but he will never go down as a true great because of this. Instead of trying to help the sport by making big fights, he bad mouths everyone and considers himself above fighting anyone. He has turned into a first class **** in recent years.
No two ways about it , Calzaghe seems hell bent on destroying the good will his recent perfomances have gained him. I've always defended him ( being brittish ) but cant waitto see the back of him now , he has soured a lot of peoples feelings for him.
Who cares about Calzaghe anyway ? let him say what he want.. and believe that he is god's gift to boxing.. he's just fooling himself
Kessler was the best opponent Calzaghe could have faced at his weight at the time they fought, and he fought him. Hopkins was the best opponent Calzaghe could have faced near his weightclass at the time they fought and he fought him. Calzaghe, of course, wanted the fight years earlier, but Hopkins nixed that one. He certainly hasn't 'avoided the biggest' challenges in recent years.
i am a calzaghe fan but he is starting to annoy me now. saying people dont deserve to fight him.they deserve there chance too. what if eubank said that back when he started out. he got to give people a chance.
Calzaghe is his own worst enemy. He squandered his undeniable talent and every time he manages to eek out a little respect from people (unifying the smw title with Lacy, beating Kessler, going to america) he is quick to destroy it (manfredo debacle, fighting a bullet riddled jones, opening his big mouth). I used to be one of the ones to defend him against his army of detractors but these days I can't help but agree with them. Retire Joe, it's for the best.
I use to be a Calzaghe fan but no more. Yes, Calzaghe is a hypocrite and the article exaplins why. Certainly, boxing doesn't need him and he will be a forgotten man in years to come.
