Its not really a trade off. Parts of his game that developed later are more important to Hopkins than being at his absolute physical peak. He never relied on work-rate anyway, and he has natural timing, even now.
Jones never killed any top fighter. You always felt like he could do more, he does just enough to win the rounds, almost like he was carrying guys at times. Freakish athlete.
I don't know if this guy is dillusional or ******ed... JC couldn't shine RJJ's shoes as far as athleticism, skill, resume, etc. In his prime, RJJ would've knocked him out (like he did to just about everyone else). This was before the McClellan incident which made RJJ more reluctant to "finish off" opponents. RJJ was the champion at 160, 168, 175, and Heavyweight. He could've won at Cruiserweight as well. This isn't even close. RJJ was faster than Calzaghe, stronger, hit harder, more skilled, had better reflexes, and fought better opposition. Give me a break. What a joke...
Unless he came into the ring angry. You get an indication of what he was capable of with a little fire when you watch Jones vs Griffin II or Richard Hall. Man, he really didn't like Hall and made it obvious from the opening bell.
good post but i don't agree. calzaghe has been protected all his career and his fight with 'grandpa' hopkins showed his deficiencies. calzaghe has never fought a proven world class fighter in his prime and will be remembered as a 'what might have been' fighter. jones, like floyd, re-write the book on how to fight and that is why they'll be remembered as the top 2 fighters of the last 20 years. calzaghe was a very talented fighter who never wanted to find out just how good he was.
please never ever refer to him as "the champion" at heavyweight ever again. it makes me want to vomit.
because, as you said above, "he was carrying guys at times". it's pretty obvious to see jones was light years above his opposition.
Yes it is true...check out RJJ's PRIME. Furthermore, Calzaghe is much easier for RJJ to knock out, as he comes forward and is always throwing punches. JC is prime for an RJJ KO
And what is to say he won't do the same against Calzaghe? Or how about this, Calzaghe is way better than some of those guys, and might actually be more competetive anyway making the knockout even more difficult? He doesn't knockout Calzaghe.
