There should be no doubt in anyones mind about how good calzaghe is. his skill is awesome and so is his record.

    the problem is
calzaghe does not want to lose 0. not that he doesnt believe in himself, he doesnt want to risk it by staying in the game too long.

LOGICALLY this is the best time for calzaghe to stay pro, he has soo many big money fights around him and fights which will give a big boost to his legacy. he can have a big fight with hopkins if he beats jones jr, it can do wonders for his legacy. he has chad dawson, and i also read yesterday that mikkel kessler wants a rematch after the jones jr fight, and is coming to watch the fight.

the above has to be the only reason he wants to retire ^^ he has also mentioned it several times about retiring undefeated. im not saying he is a coward. cos he isnt.
calzaghe must understand that it doesnt matter if you lose to great fighters, sometimes a loss can do something good for you're legacy if you come back and win.

on the other hand, if he retires and plans to comeback for one huge fight, that would also be big.

    thoughts?

    peace:thumbsup

:? Here was me thinking he already beat Hopkins. Maybe I dreamt it.

Calzaghe will be 37 years old next year, I don't think anyone should be second guessing him if he feels its the right time to call it a day.

i meant a rematch- it would be big.

i should have made a poll, wheather you would retire if you were in calzaghe's situation

i don't think he's talking about retiring becuase he's scared to lose, there's not many (if any) fighters would beat him from light heavy weight down. i would be VERY suprised if he does actually retire though. the lure of big money will probably draw him back for another fight or two after jones. it's a shame pavlik performed so badly otherwise that would have been a good fight and good win for calzaghe.

I will be very suprised now if Jones is not his last fight.

I was fairly convinced previously that he would take Jones then Pavlik.

Contrary to the prevailing opinion I believe that Calzaghe thought he was taking the harder fight first and that he could afford to leave Pavlik until next year but still beat him with the style advantage that he saw himself having in that fight.

Now that that fight is no longer viable, I think he will hang up the gloves after Jones.

My thoughts exactly. I doubt he'll fight Dawson althoug that's one i'd pay dearly to see.

Only a fighter knows themselves if they still have the hunger and desire needed to compete at the top level.

It's fairly obvious from Calzaghe's fights that he is slowing down now. And there's really not much left for him other than, as you say, rematches against people he already beat or people like Dawson, who is not particularly proven as yet, and not a big attraction financially.
