The Calazghe-Froch thing is a record argument though, as in who has the better one (it's still Calzaghe for me - as you say, the Kessler things comes into it in quite a big way for me, as well as the B-Hop result).

I don't think anyone (apart from serious Froch nuthuggers) really thinks Froch would beat Calzaghe in the H-2-H sense.

No one should question Joe's skill in the ring. The knock against him has always been that he could have fought a few more better guys and buffed up his record a bit, even if he picked up a loss or two along the way.

All long reigning champs have some gimmes on their records, just look at Jones, Hopkins, Michalczewski, but they also have some good wins.
So if you work out how many fighters were top 10 rated and how many became top 10 rated after Calzaghe beat them he fought 22 SMW title fights and 15 were or became top 10 rated. I havent included Ferreyra who had been top 10 rated before fighting Calzaghe

How was it a joke when he was a winner of 18 world title fights where he had beaten 6 fighters who held a version of a SMW world title at some point

 

His two best wins was Kessler and Hopkins, both fights happened for him when he was over the age of 35, good achievement but come on, be serious is that a legacy of a all time british great?

He was a FW fighter first and foremost, he was protected up to a point he had to leave, and then he picked a shot Jones and tried showboating like he's some sort of god like boxer?

Kessler was done by Ward and done well by Ward. Ward will definitely go down as a better fighter than Calzaghe.

I think Froch knows that the Kessler loss will always work against him vs Calzaghe UNLESS he can reverse the loss. He did fight Kessler in his backyard, which massively helped Kessler. You could see Kessler really gave it his all wheras in the later stage of the Calzaghe fight I thought he mentally accepted defeat. No way he mentally accepts defeat in front of that Herning crowd.

I had the fight a draw or Froch nicking it by a round. I can't argue with Kessler winning at home though.

In terms of records, I think Froch has now eclipsed Calzaghe or is at least very close to doing so. Bute was a great win. Taylor was a good win. Dirrell was a contentious win but it goes down as a win and Calzaghe has one of those vs Reid (Dirrell is much better). Abraham - very good win again. Pascal - another solid win.

Calzaghe will live off the Kessler and BHop wins. Eubank, Lacy and RJJ wins are not worth much. Viet, Pudwill, Mcintyre etc are not worth anything.

Ultimately Froch will be the fighter we remember more fondly. How much respect would be give Froch if he never had the Kessler, Ward, Abraham and Taylor fights because he was "too scared to fly"?

I don't think he is a fraud or anything.

But I do believe he cared more about being 'at home undefeated' than 'fight anyone, anytime, anywhere'.

I'd say he achieved about 70% of what he could have, and was undisputed in that so it says to me how much talent he had.

Deep down Calzaghe will know this, but he is happy with that '0' more than legacy.

Despite my criticisms, he is still top 3 Brit all time IMO.

 

I think Joe will always be dogged by the fact he stayed in the UK for so long, and people will use this as a reason to say he was nout special and that the last 2 fights he did have, were against washed up has-beens, shadows of their former selves.

Regardless of the career and fighters faced, he was a terrific boxer, and thats what I look for in boxing. Fighters that can box skillfully, and Joe could. People look at Jones Jr and Hopkins, but the man beat Eubank, destroyed "the next big thing" at the time in Jeff Lacy, and took it to Kessler. A top fighter.....who even Carl Froch struggled with and lost to.

It made me laugh when Yusuf Cack came out with Froch trying to be a "fake Joe Calzage"....well Yusuf, he's got a long f*cking way to go! Froch cant even lace Joe's boots, boxing wise, Joe was on another level entirely...

What I admire about Joe, most of all, is his relationship with his dad and how much he respects him. He never ignored him in the corner, he always paid attention to the man in the know. Not only was Joe a very smart fighter, he even had the smart to go out on top, undefeated, and leave the game alone.

.....and not many fighters can do that. I may be speaking to soon, and never say never, but I think Joe made the correct decision, and deep down he knows it to, he doesn't need to come back, to prove anything to anybody, he is in a healthy place.

I feel he loses to Andre Ward, I've said that before, but Carl was always in Joe's shadow, and even if Joe came back tomorrow for one last fight against Carl, he would give him a boxing lesson. No doubt in my mind.

Class above, in and out of the ring.

And my favorite fighter I have had the pleasure of watching.

But Im sure you know that Hopkins backed out 5 years earlier and Jones wasnt interested as he wanted to go for a HW fight. Offers were made to both. That wasnt protected match making, the offers were there.
Eubank was favourite and wasnt safe match making
Reid was rated above Calzaghe in some ratings
Lacy was favourite and wasnt safe match making
Veit in Germany when 45-1 and WBO int champ wasnt safe match making even though Calzaghe had wiped Veit out before
Kessler wasnt safe match making and some picked him to win
Mitchell wasnt safe match making
Jones who you think was shot was favoured by most on a poll that was done
Hopkins at a weight he didnt have any decent pedigree at in America with 3 American judges and Cortez as ref didnt look safe match making
