Recently rewatched the fight..my pick shifted a bit before the bout. I ultimatly choose Kessler to win based on his youth, ability, determination etc..I was certainly wrong about Joe I admit that and am glad he unified the titles and am proud of his accomplishments. I'm also looking forward to see what Kessler has in store for 08. Their fight made me a bigger fan of both fighters which is why I would rather see both of them fight again then to watch ol popkins fight like a dirty *****(see clinching and headbutting)and eventually get beatdown..Thinking about it abit does Joe really need to fight Hopkins??Not in the slightest..Who really needs to fight Hopkins?? He and DLH were great they're not anymore people get over it. This combined with the fact that they fight so little they've virtually made themselves a non-entity in the sport..All they do is pick and choose their fighter, fight once a year and if they win immediately vacate the title(which whether we like it or not ****s everything up) The fight with Hopkins just seems so redundant..The only logic behind support of it must be "Well Joe's only got a fight or two left in him so let him beat an ATG and ride off into the sunset" It's pretty incredible how Slopkins is still living off **** he did 100 years ago..So am I alone in wanting to see another battle between the 2 current best SMW's? It would be silly to assume Kessler didnt learn anything from the first fight..Dare I mention the hurt hands??
Damn I guess all you ***gots are more concerned with who the Golden Chicken handpicks for his next opponent:-( very sad I'm sure I cant be the only one that would rather watch Holyfield make another title run than to watch Calzaghe hand a beatdown to a ****ing senior citizen..What happens when Calzaghe hits Popkins in the colostomy bag??
I think it would be a hell of a macth, and the only meaningful one for Joe. It will do nothing for him fighting old names, or middelweights. The biggest threat to him is Kessler, like it or not.
I'm still befuddled as to what happened in Kesslers head between the 4th and 11th rounds?? He fought the 12th like he finally realized what the **** was going on, where he was and what he was there to do. Great fight nontheless..also poor ref he did give Kessler a gift early
Nothing has happened to Kessler between the 4th and the 11th. Calzaghe brought the fight to another level which was too smart and too fast even for a pure boxing genius like Mikkel who gave the best performance in 2007 by a fighter who didn't win. In the last few round, including the 12 Calzaghe realized that he is ahead and he did what EVERY FIGHTER SHOULD DO: not sitting on the lead but giving the fans a hell of a fight as he brawled with the Dane even if the middle round showed that the smart jab-based fight is more effective. It the 12th Kessler came out like a beast and Calzaghe was ready for another thrilling round. What was the most beautiful for me (and made the fight to my personal top3 FOTY list) is that both fighter were as active as it was the first round and Kessler had his biggest 3 minutes as he hurt the Welsh in the very last 5 seconds. I think that the fight became a little bit closer as Calzaghe was ready to take risks even with a comfortable lead. And with that I just can’t see Kessler beating him. No way because Kessler did EVERYTHING he could, more than anybody before to win against Calzaghe, be boxed, he brawled, the could change the pace, his rhythm, so he made a perfect performance that would’ve beaten anybody from MW to LHW except Joe. The fight was so good as it was a clash of unbelievable skills but turn out to be a slugfest at moments that I’d really like to see a rematch but I don’t think that it would make any sense. If Kessler brings his A++ game (he gave an A+ in November anyway) Calzaghe can still decide to use his boxing abilities more to win a less exciting fight. Now, as everyone recognizes Kessler as #2 in the division loaded with the biggest number of great fighters in any division, he should concentrate on the Butes, Frochs, Brahmers, Taylors and Mirandas of the division. And for Joe, it’s obvious that he is the best SMW ever, there’s no work left for him at 168. He should fight ATG Hopkins then for the sake of the top20 ATG place a future superstar Dawson, not British buddy Woods. I really liked both fighters (Joe and Mikkel) before they fought and after that I became a fan of both. I just hope that Mr. Palle gets better, Mikkel works out a good deal with the Danish, US and German TV and jumps right back where he left off with two world titles. If not in Denmark or the US, he will either fight in Germany against a top fighter in an eliminator (could be Inkin, Brahmer, Balzsay etc.) or he well travel to Australia again as Mundine is interested in a rematch. (By the way: I’ve never seen any fighter winning all rounds in their opponents backyard… I just couldn’t give Mundine one round against the Dane and Mundine is a hell of a fighter, just ask Sam Soliman. Still he was outclassed easy by Mikkel and that tells you something how ‘overrated’ is Kessler. Probably one of the most underrated if you don’t believe Manny Steward.)
Hmmm I agree partially mate however Kessler did not do EVERYTHING he could as he lost:deal Mikkel is underated Your a horrible matchmaker I would rather see Calzaghe retire than to fight a senior citizen who is perhaps the most overated fighter in the sport Kessler fight Mundine You must be ****ing stoned:rasta You said yourself you couldnt give Mundine a round in their first fight in Mundines backyard:-( Thats because Kessler flat out embarassed him So what has Mundine done in the meantime to warrant another shot at Kessler..KO a nobody:deal BIG..deal The list of fighters at SMW that could beat Mundine and not Kessler is pretty extensive Green Miranda Bute Taylor Inkin Bika Zuniga Froch Their are a few others where it might go either way
I agree but You missed my point I think. I did said that Kessler should fight a young one in an eliminator which is a possibility and of course he defeated Mundine EASILY. But! The rematch IS a possibility as Mundine himself said he wants a rematch, the Australians would give a lot of money to Kessler to go there again (this time Mundine is even more popular and recognised more in the boxing world) so it is - You or me like it or not - is one of the strongest possibilities today. Why would You fight Miranda or Brahmer for a smaller purse for a regional title if You could get a world title and a lot more money? NO WAY that Bute's promoters could offer that kind of money to Kessler. And there's no promotion for that fight because Bute - even if he is the 3rd best SMW - in absolutely unknown outside of Canada and Romania, no TV would buy it, no big money in it (and that's a shame). And there's no world champion left. So as a matchmaker I would get a lot of money if I'd place the rematch in Australia. That's why I was talking about it, because it could very well happen in a few months. As a fan, of course, I'd like to see Kessler against Bute, Taylor etc.
Hmmmm any of the above listed names would draw shitloads of money if the fight was in Denmark..And the French Canadians seem to embrace Romainians and support their adopted fighters much like the Germans do the Russians. So Kessler has plenty of more credible not to mention exciting possibilities elsewhere..And since when did Mundane lose his hardon for Danny Green?? :think
I still agree that there are more credible fights but as far as I know Kessler's situation isn't that good in Denmark as it was a 1,5 years ago so I don't see any big fights in Denmark in 2008. The crowd for the Kessler-Andrade bout was a lot smaller than expected and I heard that the event wasn't profitable at all. It was two undefeated and exciting fighters and Kessler's support was much smaller than expected. For the Kessler-Beyer unification bout - even if it was just a few hours of drive for the german fans - Beyer's fans didn't show up in crowds. As I said Kessler's position is worse in Denmark (no TV) than in any other place in the world and that a big problem. This time it's hard to see how Palle could offer enough money for Bute so in reality it's either a fight against a Germany-based contender or it is a world title fight in Australia. Kessler would be happy to accept a fight against Bute in Canada for a few million dollars or less but I don't see even a million in an offer from the Canadian and they would ask for a lot for a fight in Denmark. HBO's support would change a lot of things of course. I hope Kessler gets the opportunities he deserves.
as a big kessler fan I was not happy about the way he fought Cazlaghe.. it was like kessler wasen't there after 6. round.. Calzaghe made a A+ preformens and is a great champion but kesslers preformens was only at a B-.. hope for a rematch but I don't think it will come..
that is why cazaghe is a great fighter!! he performs his best when up against a greater challenge. i keep hearing kessler fans saying he "can perform better". well why didnt he perform his best on the night? thats the difference between a good fighter and a great fighter. the ability to step up a gear when you are up against it. also id like to add that , watching the fight again over xmas , joe would of definatly stopped mikel in the 8th if the ref hadnt jumped in. mikel was struggling to recover from that bodyshot .
i would like to see kessler v calzaghe again it was just joes ability to adapt that won it for him and kessler didnt seem to have a plan b kessler did beat mundine convincingly but mundine has improved alot since then and mundine v kessler would be a good fight not one of them names on that list would beat mundine if they were to fight right now:deal :deal :deal
the 8th round kessler was in trouble and its true he got a gift, i was at ringside and you could see kesslers corner shouting/concerned at kesslers state. I know people saying the between 4th-11 kessler was lost well i think it was due to JC's skill that he adjusted to the fight and took away kesslers stinging jab and just basically out punched him by speed and movement. I think JC knew that on the outside he would win and inside as kessler is not the best on the inside which was a weakness JC exploited when on the inside.
