It is impossible to now get a consensus on Lacy's true standing before this fight. His reputation is too wrapped up in the Calzaghe politics on this site.

Just looking at the fight as a one off, Calzaghe put on a super performance, every part of his game was on. His hand and foot speed were exceptional, the variety of his punches, mixing up the slaps with solid hits, inside work and his jab all flowed. In the clinches he was stronger than lacy as well, a lot of people expected JC to fight on the outside, but Calzaghe was totally fearless, quite brilliant performance really.

The Britihs media were questioning Calzaghe before that fight, there was a feeling of a changing of the guards in the build up, Calzaghe was cast as the faded champ likely to be destroyed by the ambitious young challenger. he surprised so many critics.

Kessler, Hopkins, and Eubank may all be better wins but Lacy is his signature performance, showcasing everything he did well as a boxer.

At least 30 out of 35 well respected boxing writers, fighters, ex-fighters and trainers predicted Lacy to win and most of them by KO.

I can appreciate that in hindsight Lacy was overrated but how can this many so called experts be so wrong? I would love to see the prediction posts from this forum before the fight took place to see how many on here now claiming Lacy was a bum were predicting him to demolish Joe back then.

Exactly, people need to watch that fight again. He was throwing 5-6 punch combos at will and landing every punch, spinning lacy around like he was a ragdoll.

It was a great fighter BANG in the zone. Masterful ownage. from the first bell to the last. Even dropping his hands and trading in the last round against a big puncher before his masses of injuries

Lacy's corner should've stopped it after the 9th.

Pacquiao-Barrera 1 is probably my choice for performane of the decade. Pacquiao moved up in weight and utterly dominated an ATG who was in/near his prime.

Hopkins-Trinidad, Mayweather-Corrales, Mosley-De La Hoya 1, and Forrest-Mosley 1 are all great performances as well.

i can say this, as not a huge fan of calzghe but not a true hater either, that most posters i knew of on this site were picking lacy. it was quite a landslide. obviously regional differences were present but still, the consensus was a lacy wipeout.

the problem is that lacy was built up out of not too much. just because MANY of us were caught up in Lacy mania doesn't make it more real, intelligent, acurate or reasonable. we were wrong. lacy, even without the calzaghe fight, was nothing much and never would have been.

but, we're judging the performance itself. based on his PERFORMANCE, against a solid opponent, i rate it as best of the british for the decade and top 10 of the decade over all. no more, no less.

Gary Shaw was going berserk at Ringside because he wanted Lacy pulled out. In hindsight & given how Lacy has never been the same fighter since the loss, Shaw was right to want him pulled out & Jeff should have been! Lacy showed heart to carry on through such a beating!

It remains the most one-sided beating I've seen live! It was most definitely unexpected. Granted, people were tipping Joe to win & I was once of them, but no way did I or anyone else think Calzaghe would win in such fashion as he did!

    Talk about being levels apart!

    Absolutely.:good
Had they had the brains to rescue him from a beating/schooling he may have been able to comeback from this loss,by allowing him to take another 3 rounds of punishment/humiliation they effectively ended his career IMO.

I can honestly say I picked Lacy to win, basically because I and most of the mainstream public in America had never seen Calzaghe before. Most of the people on this forum thought Calzaghe was a fraud
