Calzaghe left a massive void when he retired. The SMW division in particular.

Calzaghe retired because he'd lost his passion to be an active boxer. He'd been talking about retirement since the build up to his fight with Kessler in 2007, he'd repeatedly said in the build up to his fight with Jones in 2008 that it would be his last fight. The closeness of his fight wth Hopkins and potential rematch with him had sod all to do with it.

 

That's bullcrap!!! What a way to thank his fans for their support over the years than to have his swan song in front of his home fans in Wales. He could put to rest the dubious gift win he was awarded over Hopkins & go out still undefeated as a hero. BUT Joe knew Hopkins would be rampant for revenge Joe knew his beloved 0 he'd ducked hidden & scraped to protect was in serious danger . So Joe ran & RETIRED.
Instead of retiring a hero he quit like the coward he turned out to be:-(

Get real 80 % of Callzaghe 's attempted punches were SLAPS inside of the glove & therefore ILLEGAL & non scoring. Anyway the vast majority were either blocked or avoided anyway. Only mistake Nard made was when he put Calzaghe's ass on the canvas he didn't keep it there. Slappy knew that so he ran. Remember he tried to run from Jeff Lacy claiming "injury" but Enzo kicked his ass & MADE him fight.
Like Mayweather Calzaghe tarnishined his legacy by revealing a serious lack of cojones when the time comes

 

Calzaghe didn't do rematches. His fans knew that. Anyone in the world who knew anything about him knew that. The only rematch he had ever had was Veit and that was because Veit got himself into the mandatory spot, something Hopkins wasn't trying to do when he instead decided to fight Pavlik - a middleweight at Catch-Weight.

Hopkins lost a close fight that could have gone either way. It wasn't a gift. Calzaghe was a worthy winner, the case could have been made for either man being worthy of winning, since it was a close and difficult fight to score. Hopkins knew he wasn't going to get a rematch unless he forced one, he didn't. There was nothing in the contract for a rematch, the TV stations weren't clammering for a rematch, and the fans weren't calling out for a rematch.

And there's a reason nobody apart from Hopkins and his fanbase wanted a rematch, and that's because the fight was ugly as sin and Hopkins had to resort to faking low-blows and play-acting to stay in the game. It was not an attractive prospect to the TV Stations or neutral fans and as such nobody really gave a toss about it not happening again except Hopkins and his fans who wanted him to avenge his loss.

Calzaghe did what he had to do and beat him to claim a light heavyweight title then carried out his pre-Hopkins intention of retiring after 2008 after he beat Jones. It's what he wanted to do, it's a decision he's perfectly at peace with and it had **** all to do with Hopkins. It's a decision that, as a fan of Calzaghe, I am deeply dissapointed with because he still had a lot left in his tank when he walked, but its not a middle-finger to his fans because he'd been telling us since 2007 that he was going to be retired after 2008 and we were prepared for it.

 

I think the Super Middleweight Division is a bogus, low quality division full stop. Kessler, Hopkins, Taylor, Calzaghe are all ****ing overrated. So is Froch. Bull**** division, for big middleweights!

 

And he would of had the hometown advantage as well. Calzagethecoward didn't want to know. Threw away a massive payday to save himself the shame of losing two fights to old guy Hop.

 

My abiding memory of that fight will be that horrible pu$$y grimace that Hopkins was pulling, crying like a little baby pretending he had been hit low to get the ref to stop the beating he was taking :crybaby

And then to top it off, Calzaghe bent Hopkins over and buttfuked him deep in the ass live in deliciously crystal clear HD before a global audience of millions :roflatsch

Anyway regarding the low blow?? Take another close look you'll see it was DELIBERATE !!!! If you'd ever boxed you'd know a blow across the jewels like that was is extremely painful. Nothing fake about that. Did Calzaghe hit Hopkins with 20 LEGITIMATE punches all fight long??? VERY doubtful
