If by '40' you actually mean '31', by 'retired' you actually mean 'in training for a fight' and by '2 weeks to train out of retirement' you actually mean '2 weeks to cut to SMW' then, yes, you have all the facts spot on here. Well done.

Wasnt this board filled for months with comments about Boxing being in decline and the effect MMA was having on spectators?

The minute Calzaghe opens his mouth and says something EVERYONE was saying, people throw all objectivity out the window for a good old slagging match. It's getting way past pathetic now.

That's not what he said. It's how special people such as yourself interpret his words. He said there SHOULD be one champion. He did not say that currently you cannot be considered champion until you have all the belts did he???????

can't think of a single fighter that's ever held everybelt at once, if you want to include the Mickey mouse belts such as the IBO or WBF etc

Any excuse to jump on the hate band wagon!

"Too many belts and too many champions, which dilutes real champions like myself. There are four world champions in each division"

I guess he was a real champion when he was defending his WBO paper title for 10 years.

Oh just **** off. I've had enough of this **** now. Calzaghe is an excellent boxer, he's been exciting to watch for years and is a good bloke. Lots of champions hold single belts and defend them for years regardless of which three letters are on the front of them.

Boxing has now got to a stage where the belts are becoming meaningless anyway, look at Hatton and Pacquiao for example. giving up belts left right and centre to fight the big fights.

On the flip side the idea of having a champ with a belt when belts were introduced was that the champs would defend their belts for as long as possible. If you don't fight mandatories you are stripped of that title.

People don't realise that maybe Calzaghe was happy with his lot. Maybe being a world champion was enough for him (it's an acheivement however it happens). Maybe it is only in the last few years that Joe has realised just how good he is????

Please tell me what consitutes a real champion. Calzaghe has no problem dismissing other fighters as fake champions. So what makes Calzaghe a real champion?

good post, i agree with all you said but......it can also be said that what Joe was saying was hypocritical about the belts/champions part, if he really thought that there should really only be one champ, why did it take him so long to unify? anyone can say one thing, but it's different to carry out those actions...

    but i guess hindsight's 20-20

I don't think that he was talking about unification to be honest i think he was saying there should be only one sanctioning body.

Obviously it will never happen because people make to much money from the sport in its current format

Because regardless how long it took him to unify, eventually he did. He's held WBC, IBF, WBA and WBO belts at SMW. Up at light heavy he beat the man considered to be number one in a marquee fight and has made a lot of money in order to retire. fair play to him i say.

That's better than having no aptitude at all but one that compells you to spout comments like that rather than something constructve.
How can i possibly contradict myself when i was simply exploring the different stand points on this arguement.
Different fighters have different goals, I was simply throwing a few ideas into the hat. Until you've got a decent arguement or suggestion, please feel free to go and take a long walk of a short pier.
