And what? He still became undisputed Super Middle Weight champ, more than can be said for bums like Pavlik and Lacy who get hyped 1000000 times more than Joe for no reason at all.
2007, I'd say, if we're talking about the kind of status that a champion would have if, as Calzaghe says, there was only one sanctioning body. Before then, even if you rated Calzaghe the best in the division from a personal standpoint, there were always legitimate contenders who could be argued for. After beating Kessler he was undeniably number one in the division.
No i'm not saying that at all, otherwise i would have said those exact words but i didn't did I bum lord? there is a difference in the modern boxing era between a champ and an undisputed champ is there not? for most of Calzaghe's reign there were four separate champs. Had Robin reid retained his WBC strap before fighting Calzaghe and had Mitchell retained his WBA strap before he fought Joe then he would have unified many years ago. Poor management and bad luck have darkened his career unfortunately for him.
So then you're saying that, even before he unified, Calzaghe was a real champ by virtue of holding a WBO title that was vacant when he won it? So then aren't all the ABC titleholder's real champs by your standards? According to Joe, they aren't. According to Joe's own logic, he couldn't have considered himself a real champ when he just had that WBO title.
According to Joe, no-one. Which, according to him, is to the detriment of boxing. Are you going to get around to stating whether you agree or disagree with the not-particularly-earth-shattering points that he was actually making?
Nope i didn't say that. you need to learn to read. your trying to make yourself look clever by disecting comments that should be taken on face value. ALL CALZAGHE MEANT WAS THERE SHOULD be only one champion not that until someone has twatted superman he can't be called champ. lol
He also said the multitude of champs dilute real champs like himself. This brings us back to the original point, what constitutes a real champ? When did Calzaghe meet the qualifications of being a real champ?
When he beat all the other champs in the supermiddle division...and then when he beat the real champ at 175 maybe? EDIT: Does it matter when he got all the belts?
If boxing can be structured like the UFC where there is only 1 champ per division than the sport would get more respect ..But MMA will never do the numbers boxing does why becuase were all suckers for boxing !!
