He was a good fighter but no way is he in the same league as Hagler and Monzon.Joe beat some decent fighters but he also beat some poor ones. His best 2 wins are Kess and Lacy. The Jones and Hopkins fights dont count for much.Hopkins should have got the decision and Jones was well past it.
atsch It gets worse atsch Tell us when Woods challenged Calzaghe. Calzaghe had a choice, he could fight Woods where he would be a clear favourite or he could fight Lacy for more money where he would be the underdog. Very few felt Calzaghe could beat Lacy but many felt he could beat Woods. Any questions regarding my scorecard can be found in my posting history when I watched the fight. I did a rbr back then and it's all there.
did I say Joe was as great as Roberto? I said Joe beat just as many ATG fighters as Roberto did, so if people claim Roberto is top 5-10, where does Joe go in the ATG ranking? It was more to show how Roberto is a bit overrated and Joe underrated. I never said Joe is as great as Roberto. he isn't, but Joe is underrated.
Your obsession with Duran is pretty sad MAG...you are never ever ever going to convince people that he isn't the level of greatness most think he is.
I am not trying to convince and it isn't obsession, but when people underrate guys then it comes to my mind how Duran has been a bit overrated a I think because of his great personality and charisma, same as Joe and even Virgil Hill was underrated for their maybe lack of a great personality. But they were consistent and top fighters. It is possible that stopping guys with a ferocious style gives guys better ranking, regardless of the fact that a win is a win. Calzaghe is 46-0 in his career. Impressive, and given his opposition I am not sure anyone can really put him down much. I think Duran is great. But 5-10 ATG is not possible for Duran. It is simple. He beat one ATG who then beat Duran easily two times after that. He had a great lightweight career and fought greats Hearns,Benitez,Hagler and Leonard. His opposition and being in the fab 4 after his great lightweight career is great, but he didn't beat enough of those guys for the high level of 5-10, and Joe fought well enough for top 50. ESB is for opinions, and I do not think I have changed my opinions at all in the years I have been on ESB.
Joes ATGs were washed up. Not exactly the stuff of legends and does not compare to what Duran did. Is Jermain Taylor an ATG? Danny Green?. This undefeated bull**** is out of hand with Calzaghe.
His opposition is exactly why he gets put down....granted, some of the criticism is over the top. But beating 2 atg fighters, 1 shot and 1 well past his prime years, really shouldn't jack up a guys standing all that much either. It also doesn't make up for the prior years of mediocre opposition. As for comparing him to Duran.....Duran was a lw who made his bones moving up and up, taking on tremendous challenges(losses can and will occur) and fighting at a high level. There is really zero comparison between the 2, in any way, at all, IMO.
joe beat old hopkins and shot jones. duran beat prime buchanan and leonard and was named the greatest lightweight of the 20th century by the AP. this should be the last time these two are mentioned in the same sentence.
Mag, what duran did would be the equivalent of calzaghe going up and pushing wlad klitschko to a close points loss and then years later going on pick up a title in the division. He would have to do all this after spending 7 years defending his crown as the premiere smw. Mate, this isn't at all comparable. Neither is beating a prime leonard comparable to beating a 43 year old hopkins.
