It wont be easy for Ward to dig up fighters that clearly outweight Calzaghe, in terms of legacy. Stopping Kessler he is already pretty close, but I just dont think he will surpass him in a convincingly manner. (I dont bring Froch into the debate since Ward will kick his ass.) You are in your right to see the Reid fight as a loss, but in that case Ward lost to Kessler by DQ, after he surpassed any known standards for using headbutts in a boxing match. Calzaghe is ATG material. Head to head he would outslap Ward.
So how do you see Calzaghe do in this era of smv that suddenly became (started to seem) incredibly strong when he was no longer around to ***** slap the opposition around?
Calzaghe never fought an opponent of the caliber of Duran, Hearns, Leonard, etc. Hagler's Mugabi win is probably greater than anything Slappy accomlished. If a 160 pound Hagler fought a 168 Slappy, prime for prime, Hagler would be the betting odds favorite to win. How many ATG's would be underdogs to a smaller man? Go look at some old video. Watch Hagler's footwork, ability to slip punches, his power, his balance. He's everything Slappy is not: accomplished and an ATG.
Hs is not top 10 but he still can be ... just come back and beat Ward/Froch winner + Bute and here you go 48-0
I was in the telewest arena for the Reid fight , Robin was never in it till round 5 and yeah it was a close fight after the 5th with Reid doing enough to earn a draw at least but rounds 1 thru 4 were a shutout and they must have still been on the judges minds , defo one of Calzahges poorest performances .
A win over a badly faded Jones, a near miss against Hopkins, a dominant win over an overrated Lacy, Good win over Kessler, then a host of bums of the month just don't do it for me.
This> A lot of fighters think they are switch hitters but are rarely effective when doing it - Hagler was a master of the art. Calzahges one of my favourite fighters of the last 25 years but you could give him every conceivable advantage and hagler would still have walked right through him - Joe just doesnt have the firepower to dent arguably the greatest 160 pounder in history .
This, and I think top 50 is being generous considering he fought drunks and bums for 90% of his career.
