Possibly top 100. Biggest problem: lack of a power punch (bad wrists), spent majority o his career in England fighting bums, knockdowns against both Hopkins and RJJ, even tho both were past their prime (Hopkins rebounded by RJJ was a shell of a man), A VERY CLOSE win against Hopkins (a draw would be a fair result), lack of other notable opposition. Pluses: Fantastic endurance, fanatic workrate, fearless attitude and mass appeal. Still only top 100 tho. He started fighting quality opponents too late, and left too early.
No Showtime wanted to make the fight, Hopkins team agreed to $3 million US and Hopkins came back with a demand of $6 million the next day. Even Jay Larkin came out anf basically called Hopkins a cherry picker. Calzaghe was a MUCH better fighter than Trinerdad p4p never mind at middle so don't give bs as to why Hopkins ducked it.
I'm a Calzaghe fan but I'm an honest fan who doesn't talk **** like most Calzaghe is not a top 10 ATG, thats ridiculous Hatton doesn't deserve to be in the boxing hall of fame - yet I can still be a fan can't I!!! So if I'm from Wales I have to agree that Calzaghe is the GOAT do I!!??? Don't be a p***k all your life. I'm a fan of boxers but that doesn't necessarly mean I think they are the best! The word legend gets thrown about alot these days. SRR, SRL, Ali these are legends ok. Calzaghe is not a legend. He was the best in his division yes, but you can't beat 40 window washers, an overhyped Lacy and a decent Kessler and become an ATG!!! He very narrowly beat Hopins (could have gone either way) and picked off the remains of a very poor RJJ Not exactly a resume which stands out is it
:huh What did I say about Hatton!?? Calzaghe is a better boxer than Hatton, way better! Much more skillful and a better boxer bar none. I never said he wasn't!!!!!
A teleconference was set up in my office in New York for July 30th, 2002, and on the call was myself, Don King who was in the room, Frank ****** and Bernard Hopkins' lawyer, Arnold Joseph. Along with Arnold was a woman named Linda Carter, who was there on behalf of Bernard. We asked Arnold if Bernard wanted to fight Joe Calzaghe and we asked him how much money would he want if he did. The response we got was $3million and the fight would have to take place in the United States. After a little scratching of the head, we said 'Okay, done.' Frank ****** agreed on the spot, Don King agreed and we agreed so as far as we were concerned all parties were singing off the one hymm sheet. Arnold excused himself with Linda and I can only assume it was to call Bernard. Either that day or the next day, they came with a new demand: $6million, double the sum that had been agreed, the deal blew up.....he had then and still has no desire to fight Joe Calzaghe, that much is pretty clear." Jay Larkin - Then Programe Manager of Showtime. By the way, Eubank is considered an ATG by many.
hit man fan i was referring to this comment you made "By your logic, if Hatton had retired before fighting Floyd he would be an ATG too" and i dont see what you mean by saying calz G.O.A.T i dont think anyone here is saying that. and all i was saying is, there is a valid argument as to why he COULD be in the top 30. i dont think theres anything to crazy about that
LMAO @ these JC nuthuggers. They remind me of those punkass ballers in high school that talk too much and beat you in a game of Bball due to some major fluke. You want to rematch but he just leave for home in a hurry but the next day in school he's bragging to everyone how he beat you and that proves he is the bettter overall player but doesnt want to rematch. Calzaghe is barely a top 100 ATG. Any list that has him higher than 80 isnt respectable at all. His legacy will be overshadowed by either Andre Ward or Carl Froch within the next year or 2.
Of course JoeC is not a top 10 ATG. The thread starter definitely made a stretch. But, I believe he is top 25 material. Overyhyped Lacy? Joe literally ruined this guys career, I bet you thought Joe was going to get KO'd. Kessler is not "decent", he is one of the top 5 SMW in the world right now, maybe even top 3.
I agree. Although, either guy has a bit of work to do. Froch is closer to that mantle at the moment if you ask me. Loss to Kessler and all. Although I don't think Froch is nearly as good as Calzaghe was. To me he is still the top smw in history. But that speaks to the relative youth of the division itself. It's still new in comparison, without much of a history. And before Calzaghe, not all that many fighters made their bones exclusively at smw, it was a jumping off point to mw or lhw. It also speaks as well to the amount of time, and fights that Calzaghe spent fighting the wbo mandatories and less than top notch comp. His post-unification record is pretty good, minus Manfredo and RJJ.
joe could be big if he's american. 46 -0 is better than 41 - 0. not top 10 atg for sure, but he's definetly atg in my books.
