http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news.php?p=13418&more=1 This content is protected Unified Super-Middleweight king Joe Calzaghe has re-named Bernard Hopkins as Mary Hopkins* after the American's latest attempt to back out of a showdown. Hopkins trainer Nazim Richardson said that his man should meet the winner out of boxing dinosaurs Roy Jones Jnr and Felix Trinidad rather the face the hard-hitting undefeated Welshman. Calzaghe, who previously said that Hopkins would do his best to talk his way out of a fight against him, has likened Hopkins to Mary Poppins from the 1962 classic movie: He said, 'As of now Bernard Hopkins should be called Mary Hopkins. Every time he says my name it's: SUPERCALZAGHE FRAGILISTIC EXPIALIDOCIOUS!' 'In fact, there is more fight in Mary Poppins than Hopkins. I'd have more respect for him if he just came out and said: "Joe, look, if I fight you I'm going to get my ass seriously beat.. I accept that you are the best so why don't you just let me be and allow me to fight the winner of these old guys so I can just have an easy pay day" but instead, he's got his trainer to basically say: "Thanks, but no thanks, Bernard doesn't need to tangle with a dangerous young guy like you." Referring to 2002 when Hopkins agreed to fight Calzaghe for $3 million only to come back the next day and demand $6m, Calzaghe said: 'If he is the legend that he says he is then fight me, otherwise be known as the guy who twice chickened out of fighting Joe Calzaghe.' 'At least Mary Poppins took a Spoonful of Sugar to help the medicine go down, Hopkins won't get that luxury against me!' *Not to be confused with the Welsh folk singer of the same name who recorded the classic You've Had Your Day (My Friend). Sorry, correction, Those Were The Days (My Friend) which will be used on another press release!
Why is Calzaghe calling out a 43yr old? Why is Hopkins ****ing around, and not giving him the fight? They are both acting like idiots actually.
Hopkins is a way better fighter than Calzague, he beat Trinidad, De La Hoya, Winky Wright, and close with Jermain Taylor.. what need does he have of fighting Calzague at 43 years old ? who has calzague beat ?..... Jeff Lacy ? get outta here.
What up Jack I actually agree, he's coming off pretty bad in the public eye here. He has put himself in a bad position and kinda needs to fight Joe to save face.
Why, because he works for them? You don't think the President of East Coast Operations has his own secretary? or coffee boy? I'm surprised you didn't apply for the job :hey
Explain to me what has to happen? will Calzag come to Vegas or the US and fight Hop, **** no.....theres your damn answer.
Hopkins is a laughing stock. Calls out fighters then gets his trainer to announce that he's ducking them. **** Hopkins
It would be nice to think Calzaghe gained some recognition and respect across the board in his last fight. Hopkins is/was a top tier fighter, the best in his division for a long time. It seems a bit lame to slag him off but if it makes the fight happen Calzaghe would be vindicated. True Hopkins avoided Calzaghe when this fight would have been a genuinely big deal. I'm not sure how relevant it would be now as I expect Calzaghe to dominate a man long past his prime. He did look impressive against Tarver but that does not compare to the various other achievements of Hopkins career. This is a money fight and Bernard Hopkins isn't exactly strapped for cash thesedays I'd imagine.
Mary Popkins Well said, Joe. This ****** will never fight you. The biggest problem is you are about the same size, and hence it's a level playing field. Hopkins needs Joe Calzaghe, not the other way round. He needs to prove he isn't a bully that fights small men, otherwise he'll be remembered as the guy that chickened out of fighting Joe Calzaghe.
1) Why is Calzaghe calling Trinidad and Jones "old guys"? Isn't Calzaghe then an "old guy" as well? and if he's calling them old, what's it say about Calzaghe calling out a REALLY old guy haha? Let's face it, Calzaghe couldn't shine Roy Jones' shoes...There is no comparison with accomplishments, skill, etc. Jones went from 160 to Heavyweight and won titles all along the way (except for Crusierweight which he could've also cleaned out). Jones fought more great fighters, and took more risks (even with all the criticism of him ducking people) then Calzaghe EVER WILL. Trinidad took tough fights (even when he was past his prime and out of his natural weight class). Calzaghe sits at 168, and fights bums in his own hometown. 2) If he wants Hopkins soooooooo bad, why doesn't he just come out and say, "I'll fight BHOP in New York for X amount of money, period." He does the same bull**** as other fighters do. Besides, even if Calzaghe beats Hopkins, it won't REALLY be beating Hopkins... Calzaghe is bull****. Remember when he called out James Toney (who at the time weighed 260 haha). He just talks. Toney would've made Calzaghe his ***** at 168 or 175. Who is Calzaghe kidding? And Hopkins should either just retire, or beat the crap out of this overhyped, manufactured, champion who only fights in his backyard against tomato cans.
