Added to this a superb reign at SMW, despite some inferior opposition, it takes something to get up for those fights. I even give Hopkins credit for that

Calzaghe fights any of the top 3 Lt. Heavys and he will no longer have the luxury of retiring undefeated.

How can you gauge someone's boxing skills without seeing them fight someone good???

I mean Kessler showed skill against nobodys...EVEN LACY did that. EVEN URANGO did that. Every up and coming prospect does that.

It's not like Kessler was Tyson and took them all out in one round. It's not like Kessler was Cotto, and beat them into submission. Kessler just beat a bunch of bums and looked good beating bums.

Don't you see the difference there??? I admit that Kessler has decent skill. But showcasing it against unskilled people doesn't prove your point.

And against Eubank...it was his 23rd fight, and he was already boxing professionally 4 years. He was green, but not THAT THAT green. Oh yeah, Calzaghes first 22 bouts were against bums, and he next 20 after Eubanks were bums...look at the record, it's right there!

I don't do that. You are making it a country versus country thing. I don't care if America doesn't have any great up and comers. I don't care if you think that Lacy was America's best shot. To me, it's just who's the best fighter...

I don't knock Kessler because he isn't American. Most of the smaller weights have been dominated by non-American fighters. Even now, the Heavyweight division is dominated by European monsters...

The point is...How can you judge Kessler, when his performances were showcased against tomato cans? How can you judge Calzaghe when he has spent 99% of his career fight nobodys...people you never even heard of???

I like Calzaghe. I like European people. I like the fighters over in Europe. But I like the ones who take on REAL challenges constantly, not guys who pad their record...

 

I wish Haye or Maskaev would have called Hopkin's bluff as Calzaghe did in order to end any lingering denial.

Hmm come to think of it maybe Calzaghe's best alternative would be to do like Hopkins only 'talks' about and what RJJ actually did and fight a heavyweight champion like Chagaev (who beat RJJ's Ruiz).

 

Or let him fight Sam Peter like James Toney did haha...

Agreed...I would've loved to see that fight...too bad Toney doesn't get in shape either...

He is the perfect match-up for Calzaghe. He'd be a chance for Calzaghe to show how great he is. Personally, anything close to a "near peak" Toney would dismantle Calzaghe in similar fashion to Jirov.

 

I had Toney Jirov close so it really only came down to a hair in the last rounds.

..but anyway Joe does have a few alternatives to boost his legacy. Erdei and Winky are probably better choices than Woods but wins over Chagaev, Haye, or Ibragamov would put Joe at super ATG level.

Ibragamov/Klitchko is no different a size ratio than Calzaghe/Ibragamov is it? Calzaghe wants Ring belts and getting Haye's Ring belt would be vastly more impressive than Hopkin's.

 

I dont agree with the original post about Calzaghe fighting noone (Eubank, Lacy, Kessler, Mitchell, Reid, etc....good resume), but your not insinuating that he has a better resume, or has beaten better fighters than Hopkins (Johnson, Tito, Oscar, Joppy, Taylor, Tarver, Wright, Holmes, Echols, Vanderpool, Eastman, etc.) are you?

If so....delete your screenname, then punch yourself in the nuts.
