Calzaghe needs Hopkins more than Hopkins needs him

Hopkins WILL be rated higher than Calzaghe as things stand on any serious major official all-time pound-for-pound list. Whether you like it or whether you agree, that is a fact. Trust me.

If Calzaghe wishes to reverse that, then he NEEDS more big fights, like Hopkins, like Dawson, etc.

Now I always work on the assumption that fighters crave greatness and legacy. If Calzaghe wishes to be considered alongside guys like Jones and Hopkins, he does need fights like Hopkins.

Hopkins doesn't need anything. His legacy and greatness are assured at a higher level than Calzaghe as it is.

You're wrong, simple as that. No need to get offensive.

I pointed out several reasons why your statement that B-Hop's resume is 'far superior' to Calzaghe's was actually incorrect. You chose not to bother responding in a reasonable way, so i decided to also respond in an unreasonable way.

It is correct though. If you don't see that, one educating post from me won't help you, it's obvious to any boxing fan.

Further evidence that the points i raised are actually quite difficult to gloss over, but good on you for trying.

Your points are laughable. Unworthy of the few seconds it would take to ridicule them.

He drew with Mercado, in Ecuador, at high altitude. As to the Pavlik win, IMO that is kudos-worthy, as much so if not more than the Kessler and Lacy fights since Pavlik was more tested than either and was the recognized champion at middleweight. I wouldn't go so far as to call Hopkins' resume 'far' superior to Calzaghe's, but it is measurably superior.

And what a good word it was. You're a classy operator.

I don't think the gap is that huge to be honest. I think people often ignore B-Hop's defeats and the absolute dross he fought prior to the unification tournament when assessing his legacy. I don't see Calzaghe getting beaten twice by a fighter like Taylor at any stage in his career. There is also no dounting that Hopkins' biggest wins all came against fighters stepping up in weight to fight him (other than the Tarver fight) which is a significant factor to consider. The same is not true of Calzaghe. I'm not saying i think Calzaghe's record is better, but i think to rule out any debate about it by blanket claiming that Hopkins' record just is superior is very wrong.

  12. Hopkins had his chance in 2002 and threads like this are just plain pathetic. I have no country bias in which boxers I like but I do know bias when I see it.

It's hard for me to blame Americans as a people though because you're bread to be blindly patriotic at birth while your entire culture promotes self worth over others unfortunately.

Joe is a recognized talent & you can lay him alongside or arguably above Hopkins. If Hopkins had retired rather than fight Tarver he'd be nothing special having beaten two smaller named fighters and losing to Taylor twice; a man who is his own size.

Factor that in then say he beat Tarver iat a peak, an ATG then he suddenly gets old one fight down the line for the Calzaghe fight even though there were no visible differences between then & the Tarver fight? It's just plain silly and you know it so honestly quit this now.

if hopkins has shite on his record then what does that say about calzaghe.

no one can deny the fact that hopkins has a resume that could be compared to the likes of hagler and hearns'.

segundo mercado - you diss this guy but that just shows your lack of knowledge, hopkins took the fight even though it was taking place in mercado's home country, and it that kind of an atmesphere to get a result after being knocked down is great, he had to battle hard in blistering heat. In the rematch he knocked him cold.

glen johnson - undefeated and dangerous at the time, hopkins is the only man ever to knock him out.

felix trinidad - if you say that felix was finished or never suited the middleweight division then it is obvious that you did not follow boxing at the time. this was not a past peak trinidad this was a peak trinidad, unbeaten trinidad (40-0), he was seen as unbeatable trinidad, expected to destroy the hopkins and the middleweight division. Hopkins gave the biggest shock of the 21st century and made a legend look ordinary.

Oscar Delahoya - hopkins didn't want the excuses to pop up that he was too big for delahoya so he came in at 156, the lowest he had ever fought. and some people may look at the result and think that it was a mis match, but i thought that delahoya was infront like merchant. and the people that say that he took a dive are more than stuped because if delahoya beat hopkins then he would have been in the same league as leonard and hearns.

jermaine taylor - i had hopkins winning the fight by 2 rounds, but there are major flaws in the judging. just watch the twealth round of the first fight again and try to explain to me how you could give that to taylor. 2 judges gave it to hopkins, the third gave it to taylor, if he had scored the round correctly it would have been a draw, and by the way roy jones even gave that round to hopkins. the second fight was a more clearcut decision to hopkins but he was again robbed.

antonio tarver - after 7 months out, he calls out the guy who was the man of the division, hopkins was a major underdog and tarver was meant to put the final nail in the coffin. things turned out very different, with hopkins putting on a boxing masterclass.

winky wright - after taking another year out, seen as semi retired, he challenges a very dangerous and slick winky wright. orite the weight class never suited winky, maybe he was too small, but all his natural ability was still there. still a great fighter who could embarass the best (shane mosley x2, felix trinidad)

kelly pavlik - seen as a definate great at the age of 26, destroyed edison miranda and jermaine taylor at middleweight, moved up to 166 to put on another great performance against taylor who had the backing of his hometown crowd. kelly has an outstanding knockouy ratio and was expected to take an easy decision. however at the age of 43, hopkins put on his greatest performance yet and made another great fighter look ordinary.

lmao, what load bullocks, hopkins will go down in history as a boring racist big mouth, and not to mention heatbutting holding and constant defensive fighting style no one likes. excellent resume? dude he lost his very first fight! an then spent the next 20 years beating on the likes on de la hoya.

calzaghe does not need hopkins at all... he went america beat hopkins with american judges and referee.
fact is hopkins couldnt stop talking **** about being robbed if he went to wales to fight and now his all "i`ll fight joe in wales" he just doesnt like the fact calzaghe rapped his ass lol.

p.s. can u imagine the 2 most boring fighters squaring up...dawson vs hopkins no one would turn up hahahahha
