Some fans are deluded at times. Beating Dawson moves a fighter to top spot in the P4P rankings????? This is not even a serious coment. Dawson beat Adamek and that makes him the gate-keeper to the top spotatsch
You do realise that Calzaghe is currently a top p4p fighter don't you??? We are not talking about moving from outside the top 10 to number one mate. We are talking about him beating Hopkins and Dawson, both top level fighters, after beating Kessler, another top level fighter and thrashing Lacy. Not to mention something like 20 title defences. Think before you post next time, it will save you from further embarrassment.
I think this is a fun time to be an admirer of Joe Calzaghe, boxing superstar. There's been many barren years where I've been at the end of my tether, really frustrated at the **** performances, the injuries, poor opponents. This is what makes this Indian Summer all the more sweeter for me. I apologise to anyone who has taken offence to anything I've said pro-Calzaghe but to have known this guys talents for so long and for him not to get the recognition he deserves has been very frustrating. The recent surge up the p4p rankings along with his new found recognition pleases me and I may have gone over the top on some occasions - and for this, I apologise. So this is a new chapter, Calzaghe at Light Heavyweight. If Joe feels good at this weight, I think he will regret not moving up sooner. This will have two immediate effects. Firstly, you can rule out a fight with Pavlik at 168. If Joe feels better, happier and more comfortable at 175 then he's not going to bust his balls again for the extra 7lbs. It will be a lot [to lose] at his age, and with the years of weight problems, he could risk being weaker than ever back down at SMW. Secondly, Joe may want to make up for lost time. Big fights at 175 and Calzaghe doesn't want to be fighting any second division fighters anymore. He could easily fight another 5 times and seriously add to his resume/legacy in a big way. I've never seen Joe more relaxed, more in control, more happy than before any of his previous fights. I don't know what this will mean but he gets more and more impressive each time I see him in these interviews. Calzaghe, when he first started out, hated the cameras, the interviews, the attention, everything. He just looks like a guy who's ready to do something big in this fight. You can tell that everything has gone perfectly in training, the weight hasn't been an issue and this is Joe Calzaghe's stage... well... I hope so!
Theoretically he could lose. To Lennox Lewis maybe - I'm undecided on that one. In practice though nobody is going to be able to create the purpose bred human able to do it at a reasonable weight. Even if you cloned Joe Calzaghe, you wouldn't be able to perfectly recreate his upbringing that lead him becoming the fighter he is. Joe Calzaghe easily schools his own clone.
You have to fear complacency, that would always be a threat when you know how good you are. If Joe is complacent, he migth embarrass himself and allow Hopkins to be on his feet as late as round 12.
He only has to look a his training partners for motivation. The BBC SPOTY award was a bad thing though... I wish he came 4th.
The whole Hopkins ducking him years back, denying him recognition will hopefully be a big motivation.
Will 175 have brought Calzaghe a little of his power back? I have a new laptop now, which has a full set of keys and unlike the last one, you can plug it in and even charge it, rather than have to steal batteries out of other computers.
If you got one with wi-fi, you could go and live in a block of flats and steal other people's internet too! I think Calzaghe will punch with more authority at 175 but the power difference will be minimal. He's had no confidence in his hands staying in tact in the last 5 years or so during fights. I get the impression he thinks his hands will hold up well for this one. Some of the training stuff shows him being more heavy handed on the pads than he normally is. It's probably a mental thing more than anything else but it will seem like Calzaghe has more punching power than normal to the untrained eye.
Joe Calzaghe has a very good chance of winning the super fight. Joe Calzaghe has to land his punches with an exclamation mark because Bernard Hopkins has a tendency of moving backward and counter-attacking which makes him a difficult target to be hit effectively. Bernard Hopkins stealing the last few seconds of the round can be a problem. He's very effective in 7th round and on. Joe Calzaghe has to be strong throughout especially in the second half of the fight. The super fight can go either way since both are champions. I won't be surprise if the fight results to a draw or split-decision.
Calzaghe was better against Kessler. People don't realize just how good Mikkel was in that fight, especially early on.
