Agreed. Kessler was a light year ahead in quality than Lacy, who didn't do one thing right against Calzaghe and JC exploited and abused him for 12 rounds because he could. Kessler was dangerous throughout the fight and Calzaghe was forced to be patient and less beserk, because if he'd have tried to do a Lacy on Kessler he would have been Lacy'd in return. Additionally, I think making the 168 limit has been taking its toll on Calzaghe in the last couple of years. I wouldnt be surprised if he has even more stamina against Hopkins than he did before.
and those were "dodgy" decisions to say the least, its funny as UK boxing fans who seen him in amateurs figting for uk/wales saw he was going to be a great, i remember thinking how skinny this guy is and how much power he had.
Amsterdam, i just watched the Mitchell fight again, and IMO his hand speed isn't that impressive. Especially considering how early in the fight it was, and the fact that he had a slow opponent who was hurt on multiple occasions sitting right in front of him, there to be hit. Tell me what i am missing here, but he was more dominant against Lacy, who was a harder opponent. And his hand speed was still evident, particularly in his punches from the outside.
i agree joe was known as a puncher and his record states that upto about 5 years ago like you said. I know for a fact that he doesn't throw his full knockout power shots like he used to due to the problems/fear for his hands. also he doesn't do heavy pad work due to the hands problem.
Watching both the Mitchel fight and the Lacy fight again has made me even more adament that Calzaghe's handspeed is not comparable to that of Roy Jones Jr. Any one who thinks it is needs to get their eyes checked.
i think the amount of fans who claim that is minimal. He is very quick for his weight, but virtually everyone excepts Jones is that inch faster. BTW who's the avatar babe?
He fought that way specifically to blast Mitchell out early however, against a better opponent, like Kessler, he'd have fought from a more skilled approach. Yes, but he could have done the same during the Mitchell time period, when he had his power + speed still in tact. These skills he's been showing lately are nothing new, he just has declined in speed and power to where he can't get away with complete swarming. Experience is all he's gained, his boxing skills have been there since the Eubank fight.
Calzaghe would only be a contender in the supermiddle hay day of Nunn, Toney Jones he would have been in the chasing pack with Eubank Benn Collins Reggie Johnson etc Hes benefited that the closest challenge he had in in his era was Kessler, who style wise is the most predictable fighter. JAB JAB RIGHT HAND. He lucky he didnt fight in that era.
I agree - what was impressive about the Mitchell fight was, how he in a John McEnroe way turned his anger into something constructive(or destructive against Mitchell). He made more mistakes against Mitchell than against Lacy and Kessler. I see him as a better fighter now.
When He Faces The Old Man He Will Get His First L. Calzaghe Fans I Like Joe Too But Hopkins Aint No Lacy Or Kessler.
