Calzaghe nuthuggers?! On ESB??! Huh?????

Eubank wasn't a million miles from his prime imo. He fought well that night. Also people seem to consistantly forget that Joe was a novice who'd never mixed in anything that resembled world class.
Joe deserves criticisim for the way his prime years were squandered but he deserves all the credit in the world for the Eubank victory.

 

been a fan of calzaghe for a long time.
actually watched his first pro fight live.

its been a case of through thick and thin with calzaghe because the matchmaking has been atrocious taking the fun and doubt out of the sport.

but i do not beleive i sugarcoat his acheivements or downplay his weaknesses, to me its embarrising putting him on to much of a pedestal, i preffered the supporters of calzaghe pre lacy castigating his opposition while recognising his talent.

nothing has changed for me or my opinion of calzaghe since then .

when following a fighter IMO you should always recognise them warts and all.

as you get older , the support stays the nuthugging goes and IMO this seems to be a general rule with all posters that i read on esb.

 

I wonder how much people are 'actually' Calzaghe fans though, or just hopped on board and claimed him a pound for pounder after the Lacy fight.

Because there sure as ****ing hell was not even a tenth of the fans going about him now than for his career prior to the Lacy fight.

Tocker Pudwill was a late replacement for a highly rated yank. The whole world knows that. If you are gonna bash a guy for fulfilling a contractual obligation to fight on that night go ahead, but count me out.

Mario Veit was 30-0 and was a mandatory. To keep a title you have to fight some of these guys. After getting slapped around by Joe he went and won another 15 fights in a row and the WBO interim title. Again Joe had to fight him. The guy may have been a bit protected in Germany but he had a record for a title shot.

Mger Mkrtchian was 18-1 and a dangerous opponent that was little known outside Russia. If you think Eastern Europeans cant fight have a quick look at the H/W rankings. I can't judge his record cause I dont know the guys he fought... and i'm willing to bet you cant either.

Have a look at any long reigning champs record, B-Hops perhaps, and you will see the same types of fighter. No one with 15 plus defenses of a title is in a big fight every time. Try and look at Joe's record a little more objectively. Roughly a third were world champs... roughly the next third were good strong live opponents that deserved their shot and could live with in the ring with anyone and the final third is made up of the mandatories and replacements and the odd protected fighter. Such is boxing.

I've watched a lot of boxers over many years. Joe is just about as good as it gets. Am I a nuthugger? You might accuse me of it but I base my following of him on 2 things, firstly the skill and heart he shows in the ring time after time after time and secondly the not inconsiderable ammount of money the guy has made me over the years at the bookies.

If calzaghe had said it to hopkins, he would have been crucified this side of the atlantic and in america, and rightfully so. No where nowadays has room for any comments even in the region of what hopkins said. I respected what hopkins did for boxing but the guys a dick, americans are disrespectful to everyone, so why the hell should i even think of respecting there country!?
