Calzaghe UD for me. Difference in work rate would win him rounds.

I respect Ward, but hate his dirty tactics... The combination of the dirty tactics and Ward calling himself The son of god made me want to puke at the time...

Calzaghe UD in a competetive fight with two awkward fighters. Calzaghes output would win him the fight.

A common argument is Calzaghe beating Ward through work-rate , as if to say that outworking one guy means you can outwork another. But it doesn't really work like that.

For example , Pacquaio threw over 1000 punches at Margarito and landed almost half of them. Shortly after his punch output was reduced by half against Marquez because he couldn't be as trigger- happy against Marquez as he was against Margarito.

His output and connect % was even lower when he fought Mayweather , throwing 430 and only landing 81.

Like Mayweather against Pacman , Ward isn't going to be standing in any one sport long enough to allow Joe land flurries of punches.
Wards defense by leg movement and upperbody movement is too good. He's always moving his legs and body in multiple directions even if he's not always punching.
That hard to pin down movement will reduce Joe's work-rate as throwing combos and missing will leave him wide open to clean counters that catch the eye of the judges.
Ward has another dimension in close consisting of technical roughhouse inside fighting and immense physical strength which he would enable him to smother Calzaghe's work- rate while still being able to deliver his own.

Joe was able to throw and land far more on Jones Jr than he was against Hopkins. Ward would definitely do better than Hopkins and bring that number down even more. If Cazlaghe vs Hopkins was close , its logical to assume that a Ward fight would be even closer.

Im my mind the fight would play out like Mayweather vs Pacquaio albeit closer on the scorecards.

A case for a Ward win can be made, no doubt. Prime for prime I think it would have been a really close fight and I would really have liked to see how Ward would have dealt with Calzaghes style and vice versa. I’m sure he would have played it differently than Hopkins.

Dear Gentlemen Elvizzz and Dinovelvet your exchange and points in this dialogue are top class, analytical and scholarly. Both would have needed to adapt I just feel Ward would have adapted better to win.

I would say that Mohammed Ali and Martin Luther King are iconic gentlemen the principles they stood for have transcended. Both religious men in the fight against racism, injustice and inequality.

Calz is all wrong for Ward. Too fast and far too much workrate, and Ward doesn't have the power to get Calz's respect.

Ward would do worse than BHop (less power), and that was against a Calz on his way out. Similar gameplan (muck it up), but without the punching pop to back it up.

9-3 or 8-4 Calz, something in that neighborhood.

No Super Joe Calzaghe would do worse than against Ward than he did against BHOP which in my opinion he probably deserved to lose though it was close.
