Calzaghe on Jonathan Ross

Surely, even if your characterisation of Calzaghe himself avoiding Jones is correct (despite Jones himself contradicting it), then it is Pavlik who is now in the Calzaghe role?

Staying at his weight division defending his titles against lesser talents, not moving up to face greater challenges, not fighting outside his own country to get himself wider recognition.

You're going to be consistent here, one would presume?

 

I admitted I was unobjective in the build up to the fight but since then I have barely sad a bad word about him. It's just all this "legend killer" bull I don't like.

Calzaghe didn't "avoid" Jones, he just didn't want to fight him. There was never any chance of the fight happening unless Calzaghe made it happen and he didn't. Remember, Calzaghe wasn't a champion at the time, just an undefeated fighter from the weight class below. Why would Jones fight him? Calzaghe needed to do more which to his credit he eventually did but by then Jones was a shadow of his former self.

 

Yes but Calzaghe didn't kill his legendary status did he? He then went on to talk about killing the legend of Roy. Well if anyone did that surely it was Tarver years earlier.

 

Well by your definition its impossible to ever be a legend killer, and it should be banished from the boxing dictionary. How do you kill someones legacy with one fight?

Hell, Roy Jones got his ass whooped quite a few times lately. He's still a legend.

It's used in the sense he beat a legend. Which he did.

 

Semantics. Calzaghe beating Jones would mean nothing now.

 

I hate the whole idea of being a legend killer. It's like saying "I'm going to fight old guys." Remember Danny Williams after he beat Tyson? "I'm the legend killer. Holyfield is next." Nice one Danny. Who's next? Larry Holmes?

 

Probably not. But I predicted this fight would happen a long time ago. I don't even care who he fights as much as I should, it's difficult to get credit from closed minds. There will always be the next guy.

Roy Jones makes a big spectacle, an intruiguing build up, and he'll probably come to Wales if the price is right unlike Pavlik. I can see why it is most likely, although strictly speaking it wouldn't be my preferred fight

It doesn't matter too much to me either but I would find it upsetting to see Jones get beaten up again which is what I think will happen. It's his life though I guess.

I'm realistic about Hatton, I'm a boxing fan who likes to see Brits fight the best fighters in the world. Hatton did that.
So I respect Hatton for doing it - and don't respect Calzaghe, for obviously not doing it.
