    Continued:

    MGER MKRTCHIAN, 2004
    - Who? I am unsure myself, so although I remember the fight (vaguely), I checked the guy out. What did he do to merit a crack at the title? Well, here are his last 4 fights before challenging Joe:
JOZSEF BALZACS, record 2-3-1, had lost 3 and drawn 1 of last 4
FREEMAN BARR, record 25-2, had won his last 6
SERGEY GERASIMOVICH, record 2-3-0, had lost 3 of his last 4
VAGE KOCHARYAN, record 6-5-1, had lost 5 of his last 6
Nothing else to say about this guy.

    KABARY SALEM, 2004
    - Record 23-5, had already lost to Mario Veit before he faced Calzaghe, never won any version of a world title.

    MARIO VEIT, 2005
    - Had a 45-1 record by the time he fought Joe again. In the 2 years leading up to Joe, Veit had beaten a mix of decent pros (Charles Brewer and Kabary Salem) and obscure losers (Lolenga Mock 22-8-1, had lost 4 of his last 5, and Eliseo Nogueira 13-36-3 had lost 6 in a row minimum). Never held any version of the world title.

    EVANS ASHIRA, 2005
    - A career middleweight who stepped up to supermiddle when offered a shot at Calzaghe's title. Stopped in 2 rounds by Maselino Masoe at middleweight a year prior to facing Joe. Has been fighting at lightmiddleweight for the past year. Has never won any version of the world title.

    JEFF LACY, 2006
    - 21 wins and zero losses, IBF supermiddleweight champion, last 3 fights before Joe were wins over Rubin Williams, Robin Reid and Scott Pemberton, 3 fights since have been wins over Vitali Tsypko, Peter Manfredo and Epifanio Mendoza.

    SAKIO BIKA, 2006
    - Bika had lost to Sam Soliman (15-7) before he fought Calzaghe and hadn't beaten anyone of note. Although he was also beaten by Lucian Bute after Calzaghe, has posted a couple of decent wins against his old conqueror Soliman (34-9) and Jaidon Codrington. Hasn't won a world title.

    PETER MANFREDO JR, 2007
    - Had 3 losses to his TV show chums former WBC lightmiddleweight champion Sergio Mora (twice) and Alfonso Gomez (once), who recently challenged Miguel Cotto for the WBA welterweight title. Hasn't won a world title.

    MIKKEL KESSLER, 2007
    - 39 fights, 39 wins, WBC and WBA supermiddleweight champion. Had wins on the resume against Mundine, Lucas, Andrade and Beyer. Since Calzaghe, beat Dimitri Sartison by 12th round KO and has a fight coming up against Danilo Haussler.

Edit the color of the first post and this should be better for those that don't know how to highlight. :good

No doubt his title reign was marked by defenses against weak opposistion but he does deserve credit for Lacy and Kessler. If Calzaghe was to dominate the current SMW which is really heating up, I would have a lot more respect for his career and legacy.

OK, now before the attacks begin:

EVERY single word above that line is cold hard FACT. You may disagree with the gist of this thread, but the facts stated above cannot be denied. They are true.

Now, below this line I will now include my own opinion and explanation:
    _________________________________________________________________

My own opinions on Joe Calzaghe can be found on the thread: "PACFAN84: The Calzaghe Hater" that another poster made at a time I was under fire for being a 'hater'. I can't be bothered writing all of my thoughts on Calzaghe again as I have clearly written enough today already, but if you want to know them, search for that thread.

Very briefly, I think Calzaghe is a very talented fighter with a very weak resume. It is a crying shame he never fought the fights his talent deserved.

I know I will be labelled a "hater" for this thread, but I saw a thread today called "Calzaghe only fought bums in his WBO title? OFFICIAL BREAKDOWN" that actually didn't break anything down whatsoever, so I thought it was worthwhile to do such a thing properly since it was being brought up. (and YES, I am very very bored today! Too ill to work today so thought I'd spend a day on ESB! Yes, a sad addict).

He fought some decent fighters like Mitchell, but some of the guys he chose for defences were utterly SHOCKING, as I'm sure you can see. Pudwill he must be excused for, as he was a late stand-in.

Kessler is an excellent fighter and a real challenge, I salute Joe for taking that one and winning it so well. Lacy is a limited fighter, but he was a feared KO artist at the time and was dispatched in superb fashion. Mitchell was a good fighter and was beaten impressively. Other than those three, it really is slim pickings IMO.

I look forward to the insults but hopefully some constructive debate too.

PS: So ultimately, my answer is NO, he didn't only fight bums, but there were a good few who could be called bums and the general standard is mediocre at best.

Fail at what? Presenting facts? Check them all out then, they're all true.

Someone made a thread today called "Calzaghe only faced bums in his WBO title reign? OFFICIAL BREAKDOWN", but it wasn't a breakdown at all. If this thread is to be in existence, it may as well be done properly.

Think it's the color, most people have the default black and gold theme on the forums so black text can't be read properly unless highlighted.

basically the higlights of his career were- a faded eubanks, a faded hopkins, an unproven lacy and his most legittimate and crowning victory- kessler which was very impressive. calzaghe's a GREAT fighter but if people complain about mayweathers resume which is calked full of champions at their prime then they surely must dissmiss joe's even though half of the people who knock mayweathers are calz huggers.

In his defense, Gimenez, Veit (both times), Pudwill and Mkrtchian were mandatories, so those fights really shouldn't be counted against him. Ashira was a last-minute replacement for a mandatory who pulled out with injury as well, IIRC.

But yes, in terms of who he could have fought and who he actually did fight, his opposition was generally somewhat ****, which is why he's not #1 P4P right now.
