oh ffs...did i say that b-hop/sturm was a unification mega fight that would be talked about for years? no.

i said b-hop/sturm would have been a much higher profile fight as the people involved had higher profiles. it would have been a bigger fight. calzaghe/ottke wouldn't even have been as big a fight as the ottke/mitchell unification bout was...& it does not make me happy to say that...but it is the truth. like i said: no-one gave a **** about that fight, sadly.

You don't know what you're talking about man. Are you saying that Calzaghe was irrelevant or something then? How exactly would a routine Hopkins fight be a bigger fight than a unification fight between two long-time, undefeated smw champions?

Would Hopkins-Sturm have been bigger than Calzaghe-Kessler was?? :huh

I don't think so. Joe Calzaghe could've packed out a big venue in Wales for that fight, Ottke could have done likewise in Germany (though not to the same extent Calzaghe could have).

Unless you are only talking about the fight being high-profile in America of course?? No of course you couldn't be, because you hate American bias and the American-centric nature of worldwide boxing.

 Your contradictions are tying yourself up in knots, but you don't understand that enough to realize it.

Anyway, Calzaghe-Ottke would have been a bigger fight than Hopkins-Sturm overall, much like Calzaghe-Kessler was a bigger fight than say Hopkins vs Holmes/Joppy/Eastman were.

Popkins still desperately trying hard to discredit Calzaghe when the facts 46-0 speak for themselves along with the solid names on his resume.
Even some of the names that werent too well known were solid wins like Veit & Mkertchyan

no...but ottke/mitchell was a less big fight than calzaghe/kessler & (at the time) calzaghe wasn't a more known fighter with more at stake than mitchell.

sadly...no-one would have cared about that fight. it would have been far less of a big deal than calzaghe/lacy or calzaghe/kessler...& frankly it would have been less of a big deal than 90% of b-hop fight's at that time too...& sturm was getting a lot of coverage at the time due to being robbed by odlh so that wouldn't have been a standard fight anyway.

b-hop was a big name at the time (which is why calzaghe tried to arrange a fight with him in 2002...despite them being a different weights) whereas calzaghe was a relatively unknown but dangerous fighter who had problems getting big names to fight him (which is arguably the reason b-hop backed out of those negotiations in 2002). maybe the fight would have been big in germany...but ottke's popularity is over-stated in retrospect & sturm's popularity in all honesty wasn't/isn't far behind ottke's.

i'm saying b-hop/sturm would have been a bigger fight at the time...you guy's are saying ottke/calzaghe would have been more meaningful in retrospect (which i actually agree with...b-hop/sturm would be nearly meaningless if we were looking back on it now...i am in no way criricising b-hop for not having faced sturm).

but whatever...neither fight happened...it is a stupid thing to argue about...

Ottke - Mitchell was a fight that had interest to America because it involved an American fighter. B Mitchell and J Lacy are Americas 2 best SMWs of the last decade.
Many on here can remember the Hype the Ring mag gave Lacy, I can also remember the hype the Ring mag gave for Mitchell (some on here are too young to remember). Fans who arent old enough to actually witness the fighters during their careers often dont get a complete grasp of the fighters themselves

Hey Banger, don't know about any of that Popkins stuff, but this thread was classic, either way.

classic pal. the hindsight in re-reading this has been hillarious. even though i was part of this thread at the time, i had not cracked on to what a complete homo popkins was back then with his alter-ego's.

all his alter-ego's i'd since worked out, and now looking back on this thread, every single piece of the jig-saw fits perfectly. what a fragile little ***** he is

The haters can, for some bizarre reason known only to them, blame me for a thread which was created long before I even got here, but whatever they say can't change the fact that this is a classic vintage ESB thread, of stellar quality IMO. I don't mind Headbanger and co taking shots at me for it, as long as people keep reading the actual content of the thread and seeing that all the TS did was post facts, facts which expose one of the weakest title reigns of all-time!
