Both fighters hit the jackpot with their final bouts and retired amidst the late 30's mark. Calzaghe retiring around 37, and Froch around 38. Regardless of this, I still see folks here saying both fighters retired because of the threat of other fighters.

Calzaghe chose retirement instead of facing the following:-
    - Froch
    - Dawson
    - Pavlik
    - Hopkins II
    - Tarver

Froch chose retirement instead of facing the following fighters:-
    - Degale
    - Golovkin
    - Ward II

There were maybe some more sensible fights for either man on the table, but after a few months of inactivity both legends decided to call it a day and left the game.

The question is, who "ran away" from the tougher challenges.

lets see, froch had mando with degale - and he also had beaten the man who beat degale... so no he didnrt run from him. he probably found a cup of tea more enticing.

lets see calzaghe had mando with froch, and calzaghe hadn't beaten anyone who beat froch. so calzaghe probably did flee him in gibbering terror.

also calzaghe has a long history of running from tough challenges, selecting the weakest often losing fighter not deserving of a title shot instead of someone who had won and earned a title shot, or someone about to retire/ with an injury.

    froch has no such history.

yet they both retired about eh right age.

howeve froch went out on top, joe went out facing 40somethings.

How about they retired because they got old?

Calzaghe retired as already stated by himself publicly, his hands hand gone before the Kessler fight.....and also frank ****** interview just last week stated he met with froch twice and offered him a ton of money to fight Calzaghe and he turned it down twice and kept asking when Calzaghe was going to move up a weight. Not a huge fan of either but Calzaghe was in a who needs him club, he was too good for his own good.

Such envy, such jealously, so insecure....come to terms with their greatness, it'll feel like a weight lifted off your shoulders.:good

Calzaghe was well and truly done....his hands were shot.

Froch could have had one more big time fight...made a pile of dough and then gone to live off the fat of the land with his loud mouth GF.

I think both of their careers reached a natural conclusion (although like Frank says, Froch probably had one big fight left in him, if it had have been right for him). In terms of their actually careers, though, it's clear Froch would fight anyone, any time, anywhere, whereas Calzaghe was a stay-at-home-Joe. Despite that, I think most of us are in agreement Calzaghe would have UD'd Froch.

Calzaghe's win over Hopkins >>>>> Froch's entire career.

Calzaghe's having a W over prime undefeated Kessler (Froch's daddy) >>>>> Carls entire career.

    Calzaghe's W over Missus Gee >>>>>anything poor old Herol's ever done. :D

Calzaghe was smart to retire. He'd been dropped by senior citizens in his last two fights. His best wins were over an injured Kessler and a gift against Hopkins.

Froch proved over and over that he was willing to face anyone and has nothing to prove. If he doesn't have the desire to fight then he shouldn't.

Both retired because of Ward really. Froch would have had to have faced Ward again if he beat DeGale, and we all know Joe wanted nothing of Ward hence why he retired instead of hitting up the Super 6.

Calzaghe cleaned up with solid PPVs in the USA. Im not sure if Froch made enough cash to be set up for life.

Who was there left for Calzaghe to fight? Wlad? There was No one.

    Don't even say Dawson.

 Get off of Ward's pecker would you Jake. Ward probably wasn't even on Joe's radar when he retired.:nut

I used to think Calzaghe should've fought Froch before he retired but he probably made the right decision. The only reason he looked good in his last fight was because he fought the walking corpse of Roy.

Calzaghe retired because none of those fights you mentioned were big money fights, and he would have been HEAVILY favored in all those. Just not intriguing.

Froch walked away from two BIG money fights in GGG and Degale. He was hoping and praying for a big money chavez bout in Vegas....but wanted no part of GGG. HBO would have paid him handsomely for that fight and he could have finally fought in Vegas. I mean how can you call yourself a star having never fought in vegas?!

Froch also had the added incentive of avenging the Ward loss. The only unavenged loss. Fear there too.

Froch retired in Fear, Calzaghe retired cause nothing was left to conquer.
