Calzaghe for me. Although Fury's win over Klitschko was class, i'd like to see it in a few more performances to put him up there with Calzaghe
fury beat a 38 year old wlad. its a weakaz title fight, he just got lucky being the man around at the time. calzaghe has a little more, he has win over elite albeit injured kessler, albeit in cardiff, plus a few defences worth mentioning - bika, reid, lacy. plus 40something hopkins by hairline decision. Having a couple of worthy defences and a better top win trumps it. If fury had stuck around holding onto his title for a year and a half for 3 fair defences, he'd equal joe's ten year stint. both were quite basic but competent, joe used his southpaw stance to overcome weaklings, fury using his size similarly. and yet polarly opposite too- fury barely throwing a punch in rounds, and joe throwing loads (but missing more often than not).
Calzaghe could adapt to any style and his workrate was off the charts. It's a difficult combination to beat. If Joe never had hand problems he would have been even more acclaimed. Fury needs to beat different styles at a high level for me to consider him, let alone Calzaghe had one of the highest work rates I've ever seen from a boxer.
28 y / o Fury became champ by beating a 10 year old reigning unified Champ. 28 y / o Calzaghe became champ by winning a vacant WBO belt against a shot to bits Eubank who dropped down from 175 to take the fight on 2 weeks notice.
Super Joe. Fury is the most naturally talented, slickest and skilful HW of all time though (100% irrefutable fact). If Super Joe's hands weren't already in a bad state before he even turned pro and weren't shot to bits by his mid 20s and he was able to fight and spar much more regularly than he did he would've been even better and likewise if Fury wasn't such a fat lazy slob he would be that much better too. A Fury with AJ's and Wlad's disciple and work ethic would be truly terrifying.
Smokin' Joe Zaggy Fury got outboxed by multiple boxers already, while Calzaghe could KO opponents so badly that they themselves didn't know they were.
People forget Joe could whack before his hands went. You cant really tell with that pic above, but when he stands next to other fighters with their hands clenched together for a pic his hands look terrible, puffy from years of bruising breaks etc
Eubanks performance showed he wasn't shot to bits at all, he had some good fights left in him after Calzaghe. Past prime yes, but he had his chin, heart, grittiness and tons of experience going into this fight still
Calzaghe. Fast hands, feet, iron chin, decent power he didn't have many flaws as a fighter. Shame he didn't achieve more I think he under achieved when all said and done, he's a better fighter than his record suggests and that's coming from a huge Calzaghe critic.
Regarding best British fighters ever Clazaghe's resume is only second to Lewis. Whilst Tyson Fury is at present the British equivalent to Hasim Rahman.
