Hopkins didn't ALMOST beat Joe Calzaghe. Hopkins was beaten for 8-9 rounds out of 12. He was LUCKY that people can't judge fights to get the SD. He simply didn't do enough or land enough. Hopkins at 43 - turned around and absolutely dominated the undisputed middleweight champ in the next fight, he also had dominated Winky Wright and Antonio Tarver in fights prior to Calzaghe. Calzaghe was 37 at the time of their fight, not exactly a spring chicken and the fact that it was his second to last fight should tell you where in his career he was when he took it. Toney NEVER had the ability Hopkins had at 43, let alone the conditioning and mentality. Toney also never had the mentality of the top level fighters, which explains why he has so many controversial decisions and also why he has so many losses. The guy doesn't have the style nor mentality to beat Calzaghe.
Take their fights against RJJ as an example. Toney did absolutely nothing to worry Jones Jr. Hopkins at least made the fight competitive. Hopkins at 40 was a better boxer than he was when he fought RJJ. Toney is the most over-rated sack of **** on these boards, the guy was never mentally prepared and relied solely on his ability to slick out certain opponents and his ability to trash talk to get him popularity. His win over McCallum was no better than Joes win over Eubank in my view. I also think if Toney went through Calzaghe's career, he would have had losses.
Hopkins: Fleet footed; you throw a punch he counters and/or ties up. Toney: Flat footed; slips multiple punches and chooses select counters Yes...yes I see the similarity clearly allowing Joe to throw more punches than Hopkins would will allow Toney to take the decision against a man known for throwing massive numbers per fight...
Saying Calzaghe wins easily is simply being uninformed, though Calzaghe would win it would be difficult.
As for "Toney will make Calzaghe miss just as much as Hopkins did" - that's alright, Hopkins still had more punches landed on him in that fight than any other fight (including the RJJ fight) The argument about Hopkins being past it and old got blown out of the water when he absolutely dominated Pavlik, too. Let's look at their respective advantages. Conditioning: Calzaghe Workrate: Calzaghe Handspeed: Calzaghe Footspeed: Calzaghe Power: Toney Defense: Toney Mentality: Calzaghe Adaptability: Calzaghe The fight is a simple one to call at 168-175. If Toney tries his faux-rope-a-dope tactic against Calzaghe, he's not going to get a chance to throw that counter, he'll have leather flying in his face the entire time. Toney's only chance at victory against Calzaghe in any shape of their careers would be trying to time Calzaghe with punches when Calzaghe squares as he throws his lead lefts, even then, I don't see him being any quicker with this punch than Kessler was.
You're a complete ****in idiot. You're basically calling Toney a *****. Mike McCallum would tea bag both Eubank and Calzaghe. And if Calzaghe went through Toney's career he would've never had one. Nunn , Johnson, McCallum, Jirov, Barkley, Williams ect ect
erm, no just no. Hopkins is debatable however, Toney would beat everyone on Calzaghe's resume, even shot roy jones. Calzaghe's resume is not great, no where near. His 2 big wins came way too late in their careers.
It's not uninformed. Anyone who has actually seen Toney's fights realise the guy struggles against high volume punchers who have handspeed and come in angles different to the conventional fighter.
Toney lost to fighters far worse than people on Calzaghe's career. Toney would struggle with Eubank. Toney would struggle with Hopkins. Toney would struggle with Kessler. Toney at 37 would not beat RJJ at 40 if he was campaigning at 168. Toney couldn't campaign at his correct weight because he lacks mental toughness and is lazy. That doesn't win you fights against elite.
Jesus Christ, dont you guys get it. Calzaghe will never be rated high enough because he isnt BLACK and he isnt AMERICAN. There. D
