Until JC also adapts, at which point he wins. Toney had a marvelous ability to **** up and lose fights that he shouldn't have. JC didn't have this. Toney to lose, and his fans to say "at his best he would have won". Kinda like against Thadzi.
I agree with some of what you said, but the truth is that joe didn't have a nemesis in the late 90's early 2000's at 168 because there was nobody. Toney and jones were long gone from supermiddle when Joe was anybody at all, and hopkins publicly priced himself out of a calz fight in 01' FACT!! All joe had at 168 to fight were a bunch of sissies in germany named beyer and ottke, and those guys had a case of diarreah every time joe's name was mentioned. So, he had no other fighters to face at 68 but old brewer, undefeated prime sheika, old woodhall, etc. because at least those guys were former world champs or in omar's case was knocking on the door of being one. Was joe supposed to travel to america to fight the likes of echols or even vanderpool? Please! Joe fought who there was. Name me one worth of **** fighter at 68 joe could have fought from 98-04 before the lacy fight that would've changed his resume at all. Nuff said. The Glen johnson opportunity was a bad time personally for joe, as he was in a very messy divorce where his ex was trying to bankrupt him. All in all in his era of when he was fighting, and where he comes from i'd say joe did all he could do. The closing chapter on his career is all that matters. His wins over Lacy, kessler, hopkins, and old jones will be what he's remembered by in canastota. As Great wins. And joe will be inducted 1 st ballot in 5 years. Bank on it haters!
JC never faught opposition on his talent or ability level until LATE in his career. No one know how Joe would perform if he chose to seek challenges that were definitley there during his prime years. He chose to sit back and seek easy oposition to hold on to his undefeated record and WBO title. Joe could have secure a FAAAAAR better legacy than he has had he pushed for the challenges that James, Nard and Jones all did during their primes. But yea....JT had lapses in his career where he just ****ed up and he paid.
I do agree with some of this as well. Joe was fighting in a very weak divisio at 168......similar to Jones at 175 for yrs. But the difference was JOnes DID fight truly great fighters in their primes, Toney and Nard as well. There is no doubt Joe will be in the Hall of fame.....he was in the Hall of fame without his wins over Lacy, Hopkins and Jones. Just b/c of his title run and his talent and skill level. He sealed a better legacy with his latest wins but they are not GREAT wins in the eyes of most. But Joe is considered a great fighter based on what he does in the ring.
Joe and Hopkins have very similar careers with their biggest wins coming later into their career, although Hopkins career is still continuing which is beyond belief. Toney lost to fighters much worse than fighters Calzaghe beat. Look at the dominance now of European boxers in and around the 160-175 divisions and start to realise that the European "bums" you're talking about that Joe faced probably represented the same types of fighters as it does now. The difference? Calzaghe made 168 sexy - had Joe not been around, beaten Lacy, beaten Hopkins, beaten Jones Jr and beaten Kessler, would anyone care about 168? No. Let's face it, 160 is a dead division, it's marquee fighter (Pavlik) got **** canned against Hopkins who was beaten by Calzaghe. 175 is a dead division, because you have a boring marquee fighter who got a gift against an old journeyman in Johnson 168 is talent rich, but 90% of that talent is European.
This is your brain on drugs...crack, meth, powder, lean, dust, water, heroin, shrooms, lsd...and a couple advil
How do you figure? James was consistantly fighting from 160 to 168 since the start of his career to around 1994 and was dominant in both divisions.
Dominant? He got gift decisions, he got dominated by RJJ in a way that proves his struggles against boxers, was constantly complaining about being weight drained and had his best wins over old fighters. All of this is forgotten, yet people want to give PBF **** about his victories or Calzaghe or Klit, Toney is a fat sack of **** who has a career as much for his mouth as he does his skillset. There was a period at 160 where he was a very good boxer, but he never had the focus to beat the greats. Calzaghe is a great.
A 255 pound Samuel Peter punching Toney in the Back of his Head 200 times cant knock him out......but a light punching slapper will..........atsch
And just a quick note to the calzaghe fans in here.....The garbage you have been posting in this thread is the reason people hate on Joe so much. Joe Calzaghe was a great fighter..... Could he have beat Toney?...Maybe......could Toney have beaten Joe?....Maybe. We don't know the what the outcome would be and we never will.
Toney hd an iron chin, fast hands, was a more solid hitter than Calzaghe and a cleaner puncher. if Calzaghe can keep at mid-range when Toney is trying to fight off the ropse he could win. I say at super-middle they split a ten fight series 5-5, Calzaghe is the only man to get stopped out of both of them in the ten, probably the first fight.
