Calzaghe could pile the pundage on to 193lbs like Jones did for Ruiz and still beat/outwork the Holyfield Toney beat. ****, the man walks around @ 180 ish if he fought Holy at the age and decline Toney fought Holy he woulda won as well. But anyway Toney is a slipper Calzaghe is a workhouse. Different styles for the slower HW division but still everything I said holds true. P.S. I fixed the title since so many people found that the only valid part they could nit pick.
Calzaghe could have beaten a prime Toney on points. Maybe. But there is no way that he would have taken the fight.
This is a thoroughly dreadful analysis. Only a true semen-depository would reduce a fight between two such high level fighters to "he would get 'outworked'". Michael Nunn outworked Toney, Vassily Jirov outworked Toney. A past-prime Hopkins and the fossilized remains of Roy Jones floored Calzaghe - think what a prime Toney could do with hard, accurate inside or overhand right counters. Calzaghe's defence would let him down here. He would be outskilled. Toney by points, widely because of a couple of knockdowns. Now **** off and get the hoovering done before anyone notices you said "JOE HAS BETTER UPPER BODY MOVEMENT" or "JOE IS MORE TECHNICAL"!!!!!!!!!!!! :good
PS: I have just noticed you keep bringing up the Holyfield fight. Please do not reply to my posts because I have no interest in you. You clearly don't have the first clue about James Toney, his career, or boxing in general. The Holyfield fight was at heavyweight. Toney's peak was 91-94 at mw and smw, a decade before he faced Holyfield. You're a waste of a username.
I don't disagree that Calzaghe was capable of beating Toney (it's one of those matchups that's basically 50/50 because of the distinct advantages that both fighters hold over the other in certain categories), but to say he had better upper-body movement? That right there made me stop reading. Toney's success was all upper-body, and in that regard he was one of the best I've seen. He was just lacking in other areas, like footwork, that Calzaghe could take advantage of. Then again Calzaghe's southpaw stance and susceptibility to right hands could see him taken advantage of. Then again Calzaghe's in and out speed and workrate could see him overwhelm Toney's stationary style with punches in bunches. But then again Toney's counter-punching skills could see him nullify Calzaghe's swarming effectiveness. Very difficult fight to call, but I think it would be a great bout to watch.
A fair analysis. I also think it would be a great fight between two high level fighters. I just think Calzaghe's lack of defence and head movement would be his downfall against a peak version of Toney. However, I can easily see how someone could think Joe could outpoint JT. I just get steamed up when I read some braindead attention ***** spouting utter excrement like 'Joe has better upper-body movement' or 'Joe is more technical'. Joe has many great qualities, but upper body movement and technical skill are not two areas he excels in at all. It's beyond comprehension. :fire
Don't be surprised to see Calzaghe fly all the way to the US to make a fight with Toney as well. Calzaghe made a perfect plan accepting those fights when all became beyond expired and shot.
