The win against Glen Johnson (undefeated at the time) - fantastic. Possibly Hopkins' finest win actually. No arguments there. But:

Wright was a smaller guy. Tito and DLH - MUCH smaller. Tarver was 37, lost loads of weight coming off the Rocky flick and fought a crap fight.

The fights with Taylor were close.

Look, Calzaghe would have destroyed Tito, De La Hoya and Taylor IMHO. And he'd have soundly beaten Tarver and Wright.

Would Calzaghe have beaten Glen Johnson like Hopkins did? I doubt it. But, as I say, that was arguably Hopkins' finest win. Styles make fights. Would Hopkins have beaten Jeff Lacy as easily as Joe Calzaghe did?

Would Hopkins have beaten Chris Eubank and Mikkel Kessler?

No. Pavlik was almost KO'ed by Taylor. He's powerful, but I'm yet to be convinced that he'd THAT good.

I made a thread similar to this the other day - get ready for the backlash.

Would have could have. Who cares. The point is not that Calzaghe cant beat these guys, it's that he hasnt. Bernard has sought and beat the best in his class his entire career. Calzaghe owned a fourth rank belt until 35.

And then he battered him into the ropes and took his head off 5 rounds later....

Pavlik is still 'green' and has lots to prove. Good wins over Miranda and Taylor. And almost knocked out against Taylor in their first fight.

But I bet you already rate Pavlik above Calzaghe

But he's fighting him now. So all this will be settled come April 19th :happy

Heidegger - I ask that you keep an open mind and judge Calzaghe again after April 19th.

With his age as an excuse to fall back on.

Yeah, Hopkins' is 'promoting' his age at every opportunity. But I don't knock him for that. I thank him for taking the fight and, if he loses badly, he does have a legitimate excuse IMHO.

This fight would have been closer 1997-2004.

Some people seem to forget that Bernard's boxing has A LOT to do with how bad these fighters looked vs. him.

Tarver looked like ****? Bernard MADE HIM look like ****.

Same with Tito and Winky. Winky was coming off excellent wins when Bernard beat him. Tito was at the summit of his career.

See the Mark Delaney fight for an example of a Welshman fighting in England in a hostile environment. Calzaghe took tremendous abuse in that one, even getting spat on on the way to ring I believe.

Joe shut them up soon enough by demolishing the crowd favourite.
