Calzaghe: US fighters ignorant! Photo: Ed Mulholland This content is protected "Americans can't fight as well as they think they can," unbeaten light heavyweight Joe Calzaghe told the London Times in advance of Saturday's fight with Roy Jones Jr. "They've always been ignorant. That's why they don't give me the respect I deserve. This content is protected they haven't got one heavyweight world champion. People say, 'You have to come to America, you're just a European fighter.' But Europeans are now better than American fighters." Calzaghe (45-0, 32 KOs), who moved to light heavyweight after a brilliant run as WBO super middleweight champion, insists that he will retire after this fight against the 39-year-old Jones. Previously he defeated 43-year-old light heavy Bernard Hopkins. Wednesday, November 5 2008 ______________________________________________ That's the amateurs Joe YOU are a PRO fighter you dumb ****. Yeah we suck in the amas because most americans train to be good pros. And maybe you don't get any respect is because you dont deserve any??? ANd who outside of Great Britian respects him really??? The Danish because of the Kessler fight?? I hope he retires after this fight boxing will be a better sport without Calzaghe and other fighters like him.
I'm not a Calzaghe fan....but he deserves more respect than we give him in the states....but gets way too much nuthugging hype from the bulk of British boxing fans. A couple guys (they were most likely teenaged British ESB'ers that don't know any better) on here yesterday were saying Slappy is the GOAT! Somewhere in between is where he belongs as far as his ranking as an all time great.
Although I disagree with Calzaghe's comment about American boxers being ignorant, you do have to admit that as the Amateur boxing program in the U.S. has waned, the U.S. has become less dominant in the sport. Although he may be an *******, I respect Calzaghe as a boxer, just like I respect Hopkins.
Why is he a douche bag ?, he did get **** all respect from america for years, though a lot of guys on here were cool with him, many were not, also he has a right to say wht the hell he likes just like we all do here every day, main difference is hes undefeated and the world champ, while most of us are armchair fans who think we know better, so yeah he can say what the **** he wants to imo
lol that's a pretty dumb statement wow only one medal in the Olympics this year! wow no heavyweight champ! After, what, forever?
Its a fact. The USA doesnt produce athletes for boxing anymore. Our top boxers seem to have fallen into the sport these days. I would still hypothesize that the USA has more top 10 fighters in each division than any other country.
I garauntee one thing, on Joes' behalf....If Lacy had beaten him, I'd bet any hater here, 1000.00 that Stephen Smith would have had him on " Quite Frankly " But never allow , or even invite Joe
It's pretty dumb to say a sport like boxing which gets **** all coverage, will be better off when one if it's biggest attractions retires. But thanks for letting us all know your objectivity.:thumbsup
