Three fight deal. Morrade Hakkar was to be the first opponent, Calzaghe at SMW the second. Don't recall the reason? Maybe we can hazard a guess. Lets see, Hopkins fought Hakkar anyway, for less money, so he can't have been scared of fighting him......

170 catchweight. It's not as if Hopkins is some physical beast at light heavy. He's old as ****, so he couldn't make 160 anymore.

You're a good poster cobbler, and I agree with you you say here to an extent. JC's win over Hopkins is a good win for him. But he will never get the credit as if it were a win over a prime Hopkins, nor should he. IMO Hopkins is also somewhat overrated, for many of the reasons the Calzaghe fans have pointed out. But the fact that he is among JC's top few wins speaks volumes.

But Hopkins has defied age in doing what he has done, and despite my not being a fan of his, he gets my respect for his accomplishments in the ring(don't like him outside). He could have retired 9 or 10 years ago and still went to the HOF. But look who he has beaten since then. In a way, it is a double standard, because now, and in the recent past, if you beat him, you'll never get the full credit. But if he beats you, not only did you get beaten by an old man, Hopkins himself gets extra credit.

The argument that their resumes are similar is a poor one IMO. Simply because if you look at the top opposition, or HOF caliber types, the list is pretty one sided in favor of Hopkins. The only guys on JC's side were way past it when they fought.

I know he his hard to root for for some, but I think if some of the guys would take the same logic and energy they do to justify Calzaghe's resume and apply it to Hopkins resume, this discussion is DOA.

No he shouldn't. Prime Hopkins was the best fighter around at that time. But he should get the same amount of credit as if he'd beaten a 28 year old guy who was rated number one light heavyweight and top five pound for pound.

Im Welsh and a Calzaghe fan, bit Ill let you know

Both Dominated weak divisions - maybe a bit harh i think but they beat whoever was there and dominated

Both undisputed Champions, but it took calzaghe nearly 40 fights to think "there is more to life than defending a WBO belt, I havent got the IBF, WBC or WBA yet!! he didnt even fight at light heavy until very late in his carrear

Hopkins is held in higher regard because he beat:

Glen Johnson (Good fightere at his peak)
Felix trinidad when he was a 5-1 underdog (a great world champion)
William Joppy (a good world champion)
Oscar de la Hoya (a modern great)
Antonio Tarver (a great in light heavyweight boxing)
Pavlik (dominated his division for years)

    Calzaghes looks like this

    Chris Eubank (past his best)
Ritchie Woodall (not a name in America)
Omar Shieka (not a name in America)
    Charles Brewer (past his best)
    Byron Mitchell (past his best)
Jeff Lacy (prove to be well matched and over hyped)
Sakio Bika (never cut it in world class territory)
Kessler (as hopkins said "Kessler!? Who is Kessler!?")

    As compared to Calzaghe's resume:

    Notable Victories
    Hopkins- old
    Jones- very old
    Eubank- faded
Reid- on the level of Robert Allen
    Kessler- Legit Big time win
Lacy- Legit win, even though Lacy wasn't the fighter that we thought he was.

Glen Johnson - beaten by Sheika who JC destroyed
    Felix trinidad - Undersized
    Winky - Undersized
Oscar de la Hoya - seriously undersized
    Antonio Tarver - good win
    Pavlik - undersized

hey look i can shoot holes in Bhops resume as well... see how easily that can be done.

and for the record Robin Reid in my mind is a unified champ after the Ottke farce.

**** me, a win over johnson for calzaghe would have ranked amongst tocker pudwill on his resume. the man is a B level fighter at best. he's lost 13 times FOR ****S SAKE.

americans make out that tarver is some sort of great fighter. he is B level at best.

so many americans have had the wool pulled over there eyes its unreal. brainwashed by HBO and showtime.

every top fighter that hopkins has fought at his own weight, he has lost - JONES, TAYLOR X2, CALZAGHE. i can't believe how many americans overlook this fact, its like it never happenned.

lets praise bernard because he beat up some great welterweights :nut:nut:nut

Why do you think that fight was so lopsided ? Jermain Taylor and Edsion Miranda did not prep him for the likes of Hopkins in terms of experience ..
