Does Calzaghe have a chance against the new generation at 168lbs. division?! He may return. Likely, Calzaghe will retain his no.2 or 3 p4p ranking when he returns next year. Who should be his first warm up fight or should he jump into a superfight?!
if froch pulls a rabit out of a hat and somehow wins this thing...that would be the only way i could see joe even considering coming back. that fight would be huge over there and you know carl wouldnt be subtle about tryin to get joe out of retirement if that becomes the case.
I'm sure Joe would "Swerve" Chad, so I guess it doesn't matter if he's up there or not mate. If he returns then what the **** did he retire for? His precious "0" the protection of which was a factor in his retirement would be under threat again!! I was always a Calzaghe fan. but he was so damned frustrating: He had the opportunity, on many occasions, to fight truly legacy building fights, but took the easy option ( For example: Undefeated Pavlik was available, Joe chose to take the **** out of a "washed up" RJJ). The fact is that Joe wanted to be remembered as a high-ranking ATG, when the bottom line is when it comes to legacy it is usually about who you beat!! A couple of losses hasn't done B-Hops legacy much harm. Why? Because that ATG was/is almost always willing to fight the best guys. Joe, for whatever reason didn't/wasn't! Maybe a re-match with B-Hop is the fight for Joe, but don't be surprised if his return is a "Super fight" (God, us Brits do hype up some ****ing shite fights!!!) with the guy who losses the most fights in the "Super 6"!!!
Calzaghe will only come back for 10 million pound, that's like 20 million USD. If a fighter offers that to him, I don't see him saying no. But beyond that? For anything short of that, he's happily retired. He's quite a media personality in the UK and will keep in the spotlight as a retired undefeated champion who looks the part and has a great mind.
He won't come back, pointless speculation. Joe may have taken easier options, but that was for a payday. He set up himself and his family with the last few fights and while RJJ may have been well past his best, he still beat Popkins who is still rated highly P4P. His legacy is retiring undefeated, beating a top P4Per in Hopkins and his 10 yr reign at SMW. He has no reason to come back.
He's wealthy, he made lots of money in the last stage of his career from Lacy onwards and is quite conservative with his money in a way most boxers aren't. I'd like to see him in an analyst/commentator role, I think he has the personality and credence for it. But, like I say, if someone offered him $20m to come back, he'd be back, it's not that he needs the money, it's more so that, that sort of money ensures a different quality of life for him and his family. They estimate he's worth around 12 million quid, so doubling his worth in one fight? I think he'd take that.
Calzaghe should return, fighters such as Bute or Ward are not in their prime yet while Pavlik, Taylor, and Andrade are struggling somewhat. If he wants to return, this is the right time, not later. Competition only gets harder and better as years go by.
He'll not be back, even for the 10 million. Lewis declined huge bucks to return, Joe will be the same. There's no compensation for spending time with the family and doing worthwhile projects which takes up his time, like the Heroes thing for the soldiers. I read he's planning on going to Afghanistan next year to support the troops. Good on him; he's keeping busy and only promoting boxing, not doing boxing. He's leading quite a fulfilling life, so I doubt it.
