Surely that has to be bollox? Simply on the basis that Pavliks record was **** at that point. The fight meant nothing then. If Joe did offer him a fight then it raises questions about Joe.

Calzaghe says he offered him a fight
    Pavlik says Calzaghe is lieing

one of them is chatting ****.

i went on to boxrec middleweight ranks of 2006, and pavlik was not even in the top 15, Sergio Mora was more recognised in the MW division than Pavlik. and also why would an offer be made to Pavlik who showed no intent of moving up in weight, or showed any signs of not being able to make the MW weight limit.
Pavlik never even had a title fight that time he was going for NABF, a title used to gain recognition.

As far as I remember, Calzaghe said he wanted to unify with other title holders in the SMW division, so how is a fight with an low profile American Middleweight, going to get you title shots at Markus Beyer a recognised german SMW, and the WBC title holder at the time?

Calzaghe is full of ****, if he makes these claims he needs to back it up

Yeah, well he shouldn't be fighting Jones in the first place. It's a joke of a fight.

I don't dismiss this out of hand. Calzaghe's next two fights after Lacy were Bika and Manfredo, the emphasis being on fighting Americans or fighters with American face value so as to increase Calzaghe's exposure in the US.

If we look at rankings for September 2006, Bika was ranked 13 with the WBO, in advance of his fight with Calzaghe. Manfredo's best rating was 14 with the WBC or 15 with the IBF, and he would fight Calzaghe seven months later. Pavlik, at that time, may have been a division down, but was ranked number 2 with the WBC and 6 with the WBO. I see no reason why he wouldn't have been in the range of potential opponents as much as Bika or Manfredo.

Pavlik may also not be lying if, as far as he's concerned, it never happened. It may not even have got as far as him, is possible that contact was made with his people who said ' thanks but no thanks, we're not looking to go in that direction'.

People who are dimissing this as implausible have not thought it through in my opinion.

All educated boxing fans are aware of that. I have absolutely no interest in Joes career or this stupid bout. Joe throughout his career has been nothing more than an opportunist.

    Calzaghe is probaly talking ****.

If he offered the fight to Pavlik back then when Kelly was a no-one.

Why not offer him a fight now - when the fight is worth millions more?

Theres so much **** spoken by these guys, promoters, trainers, it does my bloody head in!!!

Id love a guy just to speak up, take on ANY challenger, and prove himself to be the best.....not like a high percentage of these guys who dodge opponents because maybe they can bang, or are an awkward style etc....to be the best, you gotta beat the rest, no matter how they fight!!!

Joe has been an opportunist, and in my view he will never be considered a "great" due to this.

I'm actually a Calzaghe fan, but I'm definitely getting tired of him. If he retires after the Jones fight without fighting Pavlik, then its just another name to add to the list of ducked opponents who apparently weren't good enough to get in the ring with him.

I actually think he would beat Pavlik, but he needs to fight him before he retires or he'll be forgotten by everyone outside of Britain fairly quickly.

Froch werent good enough to share the same RIng as Calzaghe according to Camp Calzaghe - and Sports Network, etc

But Peter Manfredo was worthy of fighting in front of Joes biggest crowd to date :patsch

Joe had the skills to hang with ANY of the top fighters at 68-75 from 1997 onwards. He elected to chose the Frank Warren route of least resistance and defend the WBO a gazillion times. His finally become a household name of sorts after all these years but its been nothing more than fortune. Joe was getting schooled by an Old B Hop. He`s now fighting another extremely faded veteran. No matter how much either fighter wants to talk up and promote this bout its rubbish and meaningless. History wont remember Joe kindly. The dirt always comes out in the wash.

The excuse to not fighting Pavlik now is that Pavlik has not done enough, and doesn't deserve a fight. So how come he deserved a fight when he wasn't even a title holder, ranked outside the top 15, and showed no signs of wanting to move weight.

Plus a loss to Jones would be a lot worse for his legacy than one to a prime Pavlik.

I actually don't think Froch was a big enough name to fight Calzaghe at the time, and has only came into the light this year.

He is obviously a far better fighter than Manfredo, but Manfredo has a name from being on the contender. Sad but true.
