I don't follow soccer or football. What was this? A celebrity game?

Woody Harrelson Scores Winning Goal At Soccer Aid 2010

If somebody told me Woody Harrelson would be in the city of Manchester, England playing soccer with Mike Myers, Michael Sheen and footballing legends Luis Figo and Zinadine Zidane, I’d have said you’ve been eating too much cheese before bedtime or you’re a complete mentalist. Actually Simon Baker was there, too.
As unlikely as such events do seem, they did occur tonight. Pop star Robbie Williams has run Soccer Aid for the past six years now, bringing together celebrities and football stars past and present to raise money for UNICEF.
This year’s game took place in a packed Old Trafford with an England team filled with the likes of Damien Lewis and Dominic Cooper versus the Rest of the World. Captain Michael Sheen took his role very seriously and kept describing the whole event as the best experience of his life. See? Something are better than acting.
The game was a 2 – 2 draw after ninety minutes which led to a nail-biting penalty shoot-out. Incredibly it was Woody Harrelson and Mike Myers who provided the two winning goals securing the Rest of the World team’s victory in stunning fashion.
Harrelson only became interested in soccer/football when he was forty. He’s now forty-eight and written himself into charity soccer history and all whilst being severely charming and amiable. After lifting the cup, he admitted to ITV presenter Dermot O’Leary the penalty kick and build up as:
“The most terrifying thing I have ever experienced.”
The commentators kept referring to him as ‘the lovely Woody Harrelson’. Wonder if he’ll become an evangelist for the sport now?
It also seemed an emotional night for actor Mike Myers whose family hail from Liverpool. His father was a massive Liverpool FC fan and there was a telling moment after he scored his goal and looked up to the sky as if to say ‘that was for you, dad’.
All in all it was a thoroughly entertaining and very surreal viewing experience.
