I also read that quote today in Boxing News. I wasn't going to post it even though I thought it was worthy of highlighting, as I have a reputation as being a bit of a Calzaghe-basher (unjust) on here and I knew if I posted it all of the Calzaghe maniacs on this site would see it was me and then just ignore the quote/subject and write it off as "hate". Yawn. The quote is just another reason why I don't understand how anyone can admire Joe Calzaghe. In addition to the quotes from his autobiography written in 2007 saying that he believes Jones was shot as far back as 2004, a quote from Boxing Monthly magazine in 2006 saying the same thing, and a quote from the Daily Mirror in 1999 saying he didn't want to fight Jones then as he didn't want a dangerous fight he was only in it for big money - I just don't see this mentality as being worthy of respect or admiration. But specifically this quote from Boxing News, it just shows how calculating Joe has been throughout his career in protecting the zero. And it MUST now put to death his silly fans' claims on here that guys like Jones were scared to fight Joe 1997-2003, it is without doubt the other way around. As a boxing fan, I think his attitude is deplorable frankly. If I was a fan of his, I'd be fuming that he has very obviously taken this fight for easy option-big cash. I'm glad none of my favourite fighters have this mentality.
I think Calzaghe is a very honest man and everything he says to me seems understandable and human. In contrast Oscar and many other boxers would rather lie about something like that and act the same way.
first we take Manhattan... big week. the future of the world and a mega ultra superfight. what did joe say exactly? anyone know?
It was the same thing with Hops. All of a sudden NOW he wants to fight He waited for these guys to get old, all the while fighting safe fights and padding his record. Then when they eventually lose as all old fighters do, this guy comes out of the woodwork with his undefeated padded record of bumfights like it means something. Not to mention the fact that when he was racking up so called title defenses, Ottke was in the same division defending titles. Joe Calzone is a fraud.
Prime for prime at 168, Jones beats Calzaghe. But prime for prime, Jones beats almost any fighter who's ever lived.
WRONG well not really wrong but that statement is misleading....No he wasnt offered a fight in the 90's but he was offered in early 2000's
you say you're not a calzaghe basher then come out with " i just cant see how anyone can admire calzaghe " . pretty heavy comment. of course people admire him .
thats an ignorant statement. it is ALWAYS the job of a fighter who wants to take on the best to do what he has to to get that fight. calzaghe is being dismissive because he subscribed to frank warren's policy of avoiding profile fights in the US because then that puts his fighters in a bigger playing field and risks the momentum warren uses as a trademark of all his fighters by beating lesser mortals in europe. calzaghe and warren are not fools, and they knew damn well that if they fought on a PPV undercard against an opponent known in the states it would allow JC to rub shoulders with the likes of a prime jones and hopkins pretty quickly. calzaghe was a better fighter than most of the opponents that jones or hopkins ever fought, so why he chose to be a play it safe businessman for the cash instead of testing himself and his ego is beyond me. his situation is a rare one and i couldn't live with that choice if i'd have fought that way - especially considering calzaghe's talent.
