No one will ever look good against hopkins hes too crafty for that, dont get me wrong i like b hop, even if calzaghe never lant any big punches he still lant more on hopkins than any other fighter has, this is fact, so surley on that fact joe won, otherwise you are telling me you think hopkins has never lost a fight!
He rematched Mario Veit of all people so he better rematch B-hop. I always believe the winner should rematch in a close Veit. It's the right thing to do. That's why Dawson is a chicken right now until he fights Johnson again. I like him, but he should have already done it.
No...not slaps...but there was Nothing on them. Non effective punches in terms of damage but hey....they were scoring points. That's the bottom line.
I think Hopkins has lost fights, but the Calzaghe fight was not one of them. Ineffective aggression is just that - ineffective. I don't give points for ineffectiveness. Making verdicts based on workrate alone rapes this sport of the skill. It was glaringly obvious to any knowledgable boxing fan who was the more skilled fighter in the ring was that night - obvious to Joe Calzaghe as well, hence his face at 1 min 20 secs of that video, and hence the fact that he has all of a sudden developed a philosophical aversion to rematches. :good
Not in that fight it wont because he lost... not only that but the way he conducted himself in the lead up, during and after the fight he made a total fool of himself. Win at all costs, or cheating as it's knows is an act born from desperation. Either way, history being kinder to Hop wasn't the point. The point it Hopkins has another L in his record, that wont change.
Bernard subtlely made Joe look like an amateur. He landed the cleaner, more effective punches, was the only fighter to hurt the opponent, was completely the ring general for at least 7 rounds (you don't have to come forward to lead the action) and got the shaft in the decision. Not only that, but this bout convinced me 1000% that if they fought anytime before Bernard was 38 at any weight, Calzaghe loses.
But punches landed are still punches landed and Joe landed a lot more than bhop which I guess was the deciding factor. I'm sure the judges did give MORE credit to the punches that Nard threw that landed since the did have pop on them....but ultimately I think Joe just out husselted the older Bhop. But I do see your point...it's not the olympics where its all about scoring and pitty pat punches are enough to win in a 3 round fight.
To Joes credit he was pushing the action for the most part...sure there was no damage done but Nard was too inactive for my taste! Had he been as active like he was in the PAV fight there wouldn't have been any doubt or discussion on this topic. Nard basically played roulette and lost. He as a champion and a man creates his own destiny and I guess he thought by laying back and doing the minium...(ALTHOUGH more effective) was enough. Unfortunately he wasn't the judges.
it does need to happen again... but I cant see TV networks paying to watch that all over again... how anyone thinks a second fight would be any different is beyond me. Hopkins is more skilled and it will show for a few rounds before he's made to work and runs out of gas from initiating clinches and wearing himself down. Unlike Pavlik, Calzaghe was smart enough to make him work in the clinches never giving him a chance of rest... bar diving on the ground holding his nuts and screaming ****
