You make me out to be some kind of disagreeable ogre.

Oooo....I have a feeling TFFP (JC's number one fanboy) may have a thing or two to say about that statement. I happen to agree with all of that as well though.:good

What, like he flattened Castro (thats not the Cuban president although it may as well be), Reggie Johnson, Del Valle, Gonzalez and several others I can't even be bothered to think of?

People always seem to forget, Roy Jones was a carrier of fighters. He was head and shoulders above them, but he'd almost toy with them or do just enough. This is why some guys survived 12 rounds, when the talent gap suggests they shouldn't have, and it is also the reason a great like Calzaghe definitely survives 12 and stays competetive.

When a fighter who's main weapon is speed has that taken away from him then he's in serious trouble. Jones would do that to Calzaghe.

That doesn't change the fact far worse fighters than Calzaghe lasted, and the two on Calzaghe's level were never in danger of getting knocked out.

But thats the old "A beats B and B beats C so A beats C" argument.

Its a good job Ali never paid any attention to that before the Foreman fight.....He'd lost to Frazier and Frazier got demolished by Foreman.

    It's not, really

Not when A is Joe Calzaghe, and B is Somebody Castro the roadsweeper with 100+ cans on his record

Let's be serious, it is nothing like a given Jones "flattens" Calzaghe. Calzaghe even has the potential to fire something back and keep Jones occupied unlike some of these guys that survived.

It's a competetive decision for Jones, which I have always maintained.

Its not a 'given' that Jones would KO Calzaghe but thats where my money would be. JC has 3 main attributes, speed, boxing ability and chin, Jones would nullify 2 of those and the third had better stand up to the punishment.

BTW how come you get to pick who the 'B' would be? Wouldn't Hopkins be a better candidate than Castro, seeing as he has actually fought both fighters at the highest level?

Err, yeah ok. Hopkins didn't get flattened either, if you hadn't noticed. Infact, that fight is a classic case of the carrying I speak of :yep

I chose Castro, because its an example of one of quite a few fighters significantly worse than Calzaghe that didn't get sparked when they ought to.

You talk about speed and boxing ability like these are attributes that make you more prone to getting KO'd by Jones. Far from it, if you have speed you have more chance of avoiding Jones shots. If you have boxing ability, you have more chance of keeping him occupied. If you have a granite chin, you are less likely to get knocked out than the guys that survived. If you have adaptability and ring smarts, this further reinforces the point you ain't getting knocked out by Jones.

Remember, I'm disputing Calzaghe getting 'flattened', not that he neccessarily wins.

Maybe 'flattened' was OTT but I def. think Calzaghe would get KO'd if him and Jones fought in their primes. I can't see JC being able to mount much of an offence and theres only so far a good chin will get you when you are getting tagged by fast, hard puches.

No chance. 8-4 Jones always has been my prediction, against a prime Calzaghe. 5 years ago probably.

Only just heard about the news.

Ive just come back from the gym with a mate who was doing security at the Khan v Gomez fight and he was just telling me that he walked into a massive row between Enzo Calzaghe and Fwank Warren. I get home and discover this news.

Its a bit to late if you ask me Calzaghe should have done it earlier.

Warren is partly the reason it was 2006 before Calzaghe finally got a unification fight. But tbh could any promoter have forced Beyer or Ottke into fighting Joe? They wanted none of him. When hometown decison Ottke finally retired it was the best thing for the SMW division.

Maybe Warren could have got Joe a fight with Lucas or Mitchell when they held belts...but i think the german promoters were offering more money.

Respect to Jeff Lacy for having the balls and confidence to try and unify the division...he was afterall the most highly regarded champion of Calzaghes reign up until that point.

setanta have the next great GB superstar David on their books, so losing Calzaghe won't be that big of a blow.

Isn't it a bit late in the day. If he can split from him now; he certainly could have years ago.

    Questions.

Yup I say he could have done, the Calzaghe fans say he couldn't. I say he could have chased a fight with a prime Jones, the Calzaghe fans say it wasn't a realistic proposition. It's an argument that will never be resolved & one I'm certainly bored of now. Its all academic, he'll fight Jones & most likely retire. He's earned his retirement fight just like any other. I don't begrudge him it & I'm glad & surprised to see him turn Warren over at the end.
