No. He still won't be considered better than Jones if he beats Jones. Not in an all time sense.

How about if he beat Jones, Tarver, Pavlik and Dawson instead of retiring, would he be considered better than Mayweather perhaps?

By the way, nothing he could ever do would make him better than Jones.

He's not even currently the best boxer out there, let alone the "best of a generation." Even with the former p4p no 1 just quiting.

Yes, he would IMO. But others may disagree. Jones does nothing for him, but the other 3 are champions, two of which are clearly entering their physical primes.

If he gets passed Jones without an upset and then beats Pavlik then he goes down with the best, ability wise.

As for the actual record, it will still look very good (though I am not concerned about that nearly as much)

How close would he be to Mayweather now?

    And what about Pac?

Lately Floyd was the best of his.

    Roy before him.

    Whitaker before him.

But it all depends on what you count as a "generation" (cause some may even argue that Floyd and Roy - or Roy and Whitaker - were apart of the same generation cause their careers over-lapped).

But it's embarrassing to even mention Calzaghe as being the best fighter of ANY generation; unless your talking PURELY from a British point of view. Then otherwise, yes, he has a good argument to being the best British fighter of his generation.

Going to be hard to call him the best when Roy makes him look like a fool.

He is still a bit away from Mayweather due to Mayweather's early resume. Also, you must take into account that Mayweather spent the latter half of his career defeating bigger men whereas Calzaghe has not. Is Calzaghe beating Pavlik any greater than Mayweather beating Hatton? Even according to you, neither Hatton or Pavlik is a great fighter, just good ones. So even for a die hard Calzaghe fan, it's hard to make such an argument.

It will be hard for him to pass Mayweather as it is. He needs all the good wins he can get.

Calzaghe gets a little, but not much, credit for beating the 2008 Roy Jones, but Jones would get a lot of credit for beating the 2008 Joe Calzaghe. That's the deal when it's been established that one guy is well past his prime.

Saying "Pavlik" ain't a great fighter, than what "great" fighters did Mayweather beat whom were greater than Pavlik when Mayweather beat them?? I'm no Calzaghe fan, but if he beats Jones and Pavlik convincingly he should be thought of as having accomplished close to what May and RJJ did, tho I'd definitely rate RJJ much higher prime for prime than calzaghe.

Why are you asking me? I said according to him.....

Beating Jones adds little to anyone's legacy right now. Jones beating him adds to Jones' legacy. Beating Pavlik is a great win for Calzaghe. But comparing just that with Mayweather's full resume? It still won't compare. He will need more than that. Mayweather still beat Corrales, Castillo, Hatton, Hernandez....he beat alot of good fighters. There is nothing Calzaghe can do to pass Jones. Cept beat Klitscho or perhaps David Haye.
