What about Ricardo Lopez, he's a year younger then Hopkins?

Holyfield is only a couple of years older then Lewis as well, and he beat Tyson (twice), Bowe, Moorer and drew with Lewis, all while Joe was boxing.

Fighters of Joe Calzaghe's generation (Pernell Whitaker definitely cannot be included in this, he was at his peak in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Calzaghe didn't win a world title til 1997. Whitaker belongs to the era before, along with Chavez, Azumah Nelson, the young Holyfield and Tyson, McCallum, Camacho etc etc- guys belong to the era where their peak was) who were DEFINITELY better than him in my opinion, but others could be argued to be too, guys like Naseem Hamed, and current fighters like Miguel Cotto (who will overtake him soon). I rate them as greater on three counts: ABILITY, ACHIEVEMENT and RESUME:

(not in any order, but obviously RJJ is the clear no1)

    ROY JONES JR
    MANNY PACQUIAO
    LENNOX LEWIS
    BERNARD HOPKINS
    JAMES TONEY
    ERIK MORALES
    SHANE MOSLEY
    MARCO ANTONIO BARRERA
    JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ
    KOSTYA TSZYU
    FELIX TRINIDAD
    OSCAR DE LA HOYA
    RICARDO LOPEZ
    WINKY WRIGHT
    FLOYD MAYWEATHER
    JOHNNY TAPIA

There's 17 greater fighters from his own generation alone. Joe had talent, but he doesn't have the resume to back it up. Nine years from 1997-2006 doing nothing except beating up nobodies like Pocker Tudwill and Rick Thornberry while his contemporaries (that I have just mentioned) fought the best and each other.

He will never be considered top 10 of his own generation by the boxing world for this reason.

No one comes close to jones prime. He started at middleweight won a Heavyweight title. Wins over beter version of hopkins, gave toney his first lost. Three divsion champ.

I didnt include those guys because their prime was quite a bit before than that of the oldest fighter (Lewis). Most considered Holyfield to be getting past prime just as Lewis was entering his. I think all the fighters I listed above, at one point in time - probably 2002-2003, all were considered top fighters or top of their game even if it wasnt recognised back then. RJJ & Lewis was still considered top at 2003-2003 whilst newer guys like PBF & Pac were already multi division champs starting to make a noise.

I ranked those guys based on resume. Joe's win over Eubank, Lacy, Kessler, Hopkins & Jones(if he does) ranks better than Hopkins wins over ODLH who arguably lost to Sturm, Tito, Tarver, Joppy & Wright.

Guys like Morales ranks above them because he beat 2 ATG's in their prime at arguably their prime weight. MAB & Pac. He also has alot of other top wins that could easily rival those Joppy, Lacy, Kessler wins...

No he won't beat Jones ... and there are many more accomplished fighters than he ... if you go back to the early 90's and fighters who started around that time ... he's far behind a handfull of fighters.

He hasn't fought many champions and his level of opposition aren't up there with elite fighters of his generation.
