My point is that the thread reads "The Greatest Fighter of the Last 25 years" IF it would have read the "The greatest fighter of the last 25 yrs at 168" i would say a damn thing cuz it wouldn't be worth arguing.

im a brit n calzaghe fan.... oh and no he isn't.
just because you have a 15 year winning streak doesn't mean your the best. plus calzaghe fought alot of nobodys making defenses of his title where he stayed in his backgarden for most of the 15 years.

    :-((
Yes, when it comes to rating someone as an ALL TIME GREAT, I do have a VERY high standard compared to other fans (who seem to like to throw around the words great and legend as if it was easy to get there).

And cause you Calzaghe fan-boys run around claiming that this guy is some kind of all-time-great, then yes, I do get hard on him (try to put a little bit of perspective on him, for you boys)

I love it, coming from a Brit

I said you "****ing idiot" not to insult you - I have no problem with you

but I just think you are being a "idiot" for saying he has fought no-one

there are plenty of good names on Calzaghes resume - alot of bums too - but good wins mixed in - much like Roy Jones Jnr

If JC fought Kessler or Hopkins type of fighters for all of the past 15 years, then I will definitely agree with you.

Well, it comes down to who did you fight and when. Kessler, at this point, will have the most effect on JC's legacy.

The thing is that Roy jones, who frequently gets critisised for his resume, has wins over prime Toney, and prime Hopkins, and a HW championship to boot.

Trouble is,many posters here tend not too scrutinise too hard the records of fighter of their own nationality will slating and sneering at the likes of Joe Calzaghe. The obviously don`t know the meaning of the phrase double standard.

pugilist64, it's not only about how many times you win and defend your title (although Calzaghe does have a VERY impressive run in that regard), it's also about the level of competition that you choose to fight.

Here are Calzaghe's last 15 opponents:

    Bernard Hopkins
    Mikkel Kessler
    Peter Manfredo Jr
    Sakio Bika
    Jeff Lacy
    Evans Ashira
    Mario Veit
    Kabary Salem
    Mger Mkrtchian
    Byron Mitchell
    Tocker Pudwill
    Miguel Angel Jimenez
    Charles Brewer
    Will McIntyre
    Mario Veit

Now look at Floyd Mayweather Jr's last 15 victories (let's exclude the fact that they weren't all title defenses for a second because Floyd has bounced in and out of so many different weight classes):

    Ricky Hatton
    Oscar De La Hoya
    Carlos Baldomir
    Zab Judah
    Sharmba Mitchell
    Arturo Gatti
    Henry Bruseles
    Demarcus Corley
    Phillip N'Dou
    Victoriano Sosa
    Jose Luis Castillo
    Jose Luis Castillo
    Jesus Chavez
    Carlos Hernandez
    Diego Corrales (R.I.P.)

The lists don't even compare...and Mayweather is just ONE example of what it means to be undefeated or have a long winning streak AND have those victories over impressive fighters. Looking at Calzaghe's resume, Hopkins, Kessler and Lacy are the ONLY fighters that were capable of providing any sort of real threat to Calzaghe. In Mayweather's list, on the other hand, you've got Hatton, De La Hoya, Baldomir, Gatti, Judah, Castillo and Corrales providing REAL threats, as well as being recognized world-class fighters.

I'm sorry but Calzaghe is DEFINITELY not THE BEST in any weight class of the last 25 years. You can't just look at the 45-0 and say, "Oh, well he must be the best." Heavyweight Nikolay Valuev was 46-0 when he fought Ruslan Chagaev, so can we assume he is the best heavyweights of the last 25 years?

I didn`t claim that he did. You ought to purchase a pair of spectacles. The point was American boxing royalty Jones,Hopkins didn`t either.
