So we did the Floyd thread, let's have a legit discussion of Calzaghe's standings in the top 100, positive's and obvious negative's. Not on WHAT he does, but what he's got now for himself. Accomplishments - * Undefeated in 44 bouts * 21 title defences, including unifying the titles at SMW twice and becoming the first Undisputed SMW champion ever. * Regarded as the #1 SMW of all time as the division stands now, a shallow bit of history, but not too bad all in all, if others turn the division upside down, he's still reserved his place in the top 3. * Wins over Chris Eubank, Robin Reid, Richie Woodhall, Omar Sheika, Mario Veit x2, Charles Brewer, Byron Mitchell, Jeff Lacy, Sakio Bika & Mikkel Kessler. * If you check his record, just like top contemporaries, his wins are either very decisive or in dominative/blowout fashion, rarely drops more than a few rounds, even against the top opponents in his record. .......................... So, as he stands now, I have him in the 90's, same area I have people like Kostya Tszyu, however, I have Kostya in the upper 90's and Joe in the lower 90's. And you all?
If he beats Hopkins it will go a long way into increasing his legacy. If he then goes on to beat Pavlik, who's made for him, (unless he lands an air breakin body shot, and a huge right hand to the face), it will do even more. Pavlik shouldn't take the fight though.
At the moment about 90ish. If he beats hops clearly and beats another prime young fighter like Pavlik or Dawson he shoots up a lot. Retiring undefeated two weight world champion 46-0 is VERY impressive
Probably about 220 or something. He can have all those victories, all those title defences and whatever else you want to name, but until he starts beating great fighters, he deserves to be no higher.
If he handily beats Hopkins and beats Dawson I'll rank him in the top 80. Right now he's outside the top 100 around 115. His resume is simply too weak despite his great skills.
And Hagler? Wait - You were arguing that guys like Dela Hoya, Trinidad and Wright were not great at the time they fought Hopkins, right? Cause of size? I suppose that doesn't really work for Leonard, Hearns and Duran. They were still definately great at the time, but still. Hopkins resume has far better fighters than Joe's
Honestly, I haven't gone past about 50 myself, but I can't imagine he's much higher than 150. It's pretty debatable that he's the best all-time in his weight class, which is a young class, and the division was unquestionably weak during much of his reign, he didn't face some of the best fighters in his class while he was around (even if it wasn't his fault), he only fought 5 (mayyyybe 6) guys who were ranked top 5 in his weight class his whole career, and he's never beaten a top 20 P4P fighter (Kessler might be arguable, but that's it). If he beats Hopkins, it bumps him up a bit. If he can become undisputed at LHW, then he has a much better argument for top 80.
